You have found the site for the Compass Yacht Group. We are a group of friends who own and love our old boats. Not all are Compass'. Many of our members have started in dinghies, moved up through Trailer Sailers and finally graduated to a keel yacht. Several have moved up from their Compass to bigger boats but remain friends and followers.
It doesn't stop there, many members have gone on to bigger, better, more expensive boats. Some people find their families don't follow them aboard and the boat goes unused. Luckily, under about 30' the boat is not a major expense and they sell readily.
Our group on the Internet is worldwide, not only do we have members in all states of Australia, We have a member in each of the Azores, UK and the US. The Compass Register of boats lists around 400 of the 1000 yachts built by Compass Yachts in Sydney between 1964 and 1981. A few further boats were built from their moulds.
These yachts included the Southerly 23, (Pacific 707), Westerly 26 (Pacific 27), Compass 750, Northerner 28, Compass 28, Compass 29, Easterly 30, Compass Farr 1104, Compass Innovator 33, Compass 38, Compass 40, (Olympic 40). The period was a wild ride. The Endeavor 24 was probably the biggest production yacht in Australia in 1964, import tariffs protected Australian industry. Resin and glass were relatively cheap and by the 1970s the Compass 28 was being sold "Sailaway" for about $12,000. It was the third biggest production yacht against the Nicholson 32 and Bruce Fairlie's Clansman 30.
