Regatta Report 2017
2017 Compass Regatta
Race Report
Well I’m a bit embarrassed and apologetic this year. The planets just did not line up. The wind was only a ghosting breeze and at the final briefing before the start, participants were warned that we might shorten course by radio on channel 72, to finish about 1pm to clear VYC by 3pm.
I am afraid I forgot about the boats who came from elsewhere on the Harbour direct to the start. Not being able to go out on the Start Boat, I didn’t spot the problem and understand the issue.
So we had the leaders sail a full course and come in behind the rest who sailed shortened course.
Very embarrassing but I have learned!
The positions were:
Line Honours – E30 The Black Pearl – Guy and Tamara with Col Hunter
E30 Division Winner The Black Pearl – Guy and Tamara with Col Hunter
C28 Division Handicap – Sunrock – Michael and the two lads who provide the great tender service
C28 Division Handicap Second – Skylark – Carlos and Crew
C28 Division Handicap Third – Secrets – Ian and Crew
C29 Division Handicap Third – Nereid – Martin, Sawjin and Crew
C29 Division Handicap Third – Kalina – David and Crew
C29 Division Handicap Third – Steady Daze – Peter and Ian
The winners each earned a coveted perspex Compass Trophy to keep and will be posted their cash prizes offered by Beta Diesel Australia
At the BBQ on the Friday night we drew the Register Prize for all the members not able to be present – in the order of the draw-
C29 Mando – St Helens Tas - Maurice who we were able to contact on the first attempt has gracefully accepted his $50 Chandlery voucher
C28 Lunaris – Broken Bay
C29 Whisper Not – Last seen in Middle Harbour
C28 Lucy – Last seen Watsons Bay
C28 Tertewaan – Saratoga
C29 Curcana – Last seen Sailors Bay
C28 – No Name – Last owned by Alan in Mc Carrs creek
All participating boats had two bottles of wine to take home.
And the big prize of the night the Jim Brown Trophy (or Pumpkin award), presented by last years winners Phil & Di of Matira, went to C29 Ophelia, sailed solo from Mackay to Darwin on the second leg of his circumnavigation. It was inspiring to have all three people together in the VYC Clubhouse
Thank you to all who attended, helped, supported, raced and for those who did not win, understanding. I should mention the help provided by Colin Hunter of Spindrift II who got me and the junk there, Doug Cameron Saltair for organising the VYC end and Michael Ball for providing I33 Piscies as the finish boat.
To my knowledge we only had four boats to the raftup last night - It must have been a good night.
Regard to all and your families
