C28 Shakti's Bass Strait Adventure
Well, I've heard all about how C28's are good sea boats, and I'm happy to add to this after the past week.
Last week saw me sail from Melbourne to Port Fairy in one 30 hour hop, copping ENE winds of 25 - 35 knots over the last 10 hours of the trip. Shakti took a few big ones right over the cabin and buried her nose the odd time. But like a champ she shook it off and just kept going.
Then I did the trip from Port Fairy through to Flinders Island in one 56 hour go. Once again I got hammered part of the way, this time with WSW 30+ knots coming over the starboard quarter again. And once again nasty short steep Bass Strait waves were breaking into the cockpit and over the cabin top. My only real concern was that the tiller-pilot would hang in there, but it did albeit with the odd wild swing off course. If I were to keep this up I'd have to get a windvane.
So welll done Don, a great hull.
The bonus is that the cockpit is now nice and clean with all that dust and goo flushed out! And there was only one tiny leak.
Enjoy the regatta, wish I could attend.
Cheers, Graeme
