Christians Need Not Reject the Phenomena of Spiritualism

Christians need not reject the phenomena of Spiritualism.

    • The following passages show that Jesus was a medium and a healer who told his followers to surpass his own works:

        • Mathew 17:1-3 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shown like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. (also Mark 9:1-3)

        • Mark: 32-34: At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

        • John 14:12 says, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”

The biblical prohibitions against mediumship originate in Mosaic law. Anyone who believes that Mosaic law should apply to mediumship should also eat Kosher food, not buy anything on the Sabbath, not drive their car on the Sabbath, and otherwise obey all Mosaic law. If one does not believe that Mosaic law has to be obeyed in its entirety, one cannot argue that mediumship is proscribed by the bible.

In fact, Mosaic law was only given to the Hebrews. But even for the Jews, Jesus makes an exception to Mosaic law. In Acts 10:10-15 (NKJ) he instructs Peter in a vision to partake of "unclean" foods, meaning that to proselytize the Gentiles one must live as the Gentiles. In John 14:11 (NKJ) Jesus indicates that the purpose of his works is to spread belief: "Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves". Since Jesus called upon his followers to surpass his own works, this exception must include permission to perform mediumship.

Spiritualism is not demonic or an end-times deception. Before Spiritualists do any healing or mediumship we always pray to God for assistance and protection. Demons would not propagate a religion that says you have to earn your way into heaven by good works and that you have to atone for evil deeds also by good works. Why would demons encourage people to do good works?

According to the parable of A Tree and Its Fruit, Spiritualism cannot be evil since it yields good results. Spiritual healers are responsible for many physical cures and mediumship has helped many people suffering from grief. The parable of A Tree and Its Fruit beginning at Luke 6:43 (NIV) says, "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart"
