ART IN THE MEDIA CENTER
In 2004 Steven Fragale, a 2003 graduate had the idea to paint three large canvases and have them
installed in the Media Center. The paintings are based on a Ben Harper song.
Quoting Janet Bell the media specialist, “There are so many times that the painting that says
The Day is New has been the inspiration to make the best of a difficult day.”
Steve’s paintings have been the impetus to expand on this installation.
Josh Gilman Class of 2012 paintings were installed in 2013 and are representative of:
“Death of a Salesman”, “The Great Gatsby, and “The Grapes of Wrath”.
Jen Cerami, a Central Regional High School Art teacher. Has gotten involved and added
Student art pieces to the Media Center. All are made by her students,
She takes the time to put them in here.
In November of 2015, six panels entitled “Passages” painted in the Abstract Lyrical Style
by artist Dawn DiCicco’76 were installed.
Also in November of 2015 we have the honor of unveiling paintings rendered
by world famous Beatles artist Shannon Mac Donald ‘76.paintings
Some key Props from Plays that have been produced at Central Regional in recent years
By Stage artists Charlotte Roselli and Kelley Butler ‘76
have also been preserved and displayed in the media center.
Art in the Halls
The Central Regional Alumni Association has not implemented the following projects
but because they also instill pride here at CRHS they bear mention.
Thanks to Art Teachers Lynn Fisher,Kristen Soleaux and Jen Cerami there is Art by students in the halls
of Central Regional High School.
Beth Moore class of 1991 and the Head of the Music department here at CRHS
has also hung photographs of Central Regional High School
itself in various locations around the school.
Terri Wyman, the Digital Photography teacher here at Central has been instrumental in installing
Photographs by herself, students and other teachers in the Weight room and in various wings of the school.
They have also done a study of Hurricane Sandy photos in the hallway
heading from the front office to the guidance area.
Recently the CRAA acquired art done by Juanita Carfora, a retired teacher in
the foreign languages department. We produced prints of them and
enlarged them and they are now hanging in the Foreign Language Wing at CRHS.
Steven Fragale class of 2003
Steven Fragale (CRHS 2003) received a BFA in sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2007.
He is an artist currently residing in Manhattan.
Steven’s love for materials and techniques has been the genesis for his art.
Through play and curiosity he has entered into an array of production, design and creation.
Sculpting in wood, Steven set out to build a musical instrument
resulting in a series of acoustic guitars, a business,
and exhibition at Newport Guitar Festival in Miami with the honor of building for the Sonic Sitka Project.
It is this curious committed leaping into the nature of things that has ushered in
chalking, 3D printing, CAD, painting, bronze casting, diamond setting, and more for industry leaders.
Located in Rockefeller Plaza, Steven works with a diamond company creating digital drawings,
renderings and 3D printing models for an international group of clients.
He has created a comprehensive portfolio of engagement rings,
diamond pendants, earrings, to fantastical things like a champagne diamond paved gold dachshund.
His work in computer aided drawing (CAD) and jewelry led to a body of digitally
archived sculpture with 3D print company 3D systems.
Most recently, Steven created a business drawing elaborate chalk murals.
From seascapes to city skylines his work has been commissioned by a myriad of groups and individuals including;
The Public Art Fund for Jeff Koons, Delta, Forbes, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter,
Le Meridien Hotels, Starbucks, NBC, and National Geographic.
Collaboration and education has been a highlighted part of his practice
While working with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Digital Media Lab, a place where art,
technology and experimentation combine. He has presented workshops and classes
on mold making, sculpture, 3D printing and CAD modeling. Steven showcased elements of these classes
for a webinar with Intel Engage and their series, Museums and Makers.
Steven also has a studio space in Brooklyn where he creates paintings
and sculptures both traditionally and through new digital techniques.
His art has been shown in San Francisco, New York and Italy.
His favorite place to be is in Riverside Park with his wife, daughter and dog.
About the paintings in the Media Center
Steve quotes “ I went back through an old sketch book and found my notes on it.
I don't think I ever came up with a title.
And yes, my 19 year old self felt moved by Suzie Blue, a Ben Harper tune.
I liked the lyric, the day is new. I painted my family elders, Uncle Funzie (Alfonso)
on clarinet, he played internationally and studied clarinet at Juilliard,
my Grandfather on Trumpet, he played in the USO.
So naturally I put grandmother on trombone and Aunt Mary on upright Bass
to round out the accompaniment to the actual song. (They weren't so musically inclined)
the center panel had a bit more behind it.
And the last panel was my first painting letting go of all headiness
and just painting that feeling I had listening to the song and feeling refreshed and positive and good.
The day is new. Let's call it that. The day is new.” Lets do that Steve

. Dawn DiCicco was born in 1958 and grew up in a close family at the Jersey Shore. Developing passion for art and music at an early age, Dawn began drawing portraits of her favorite musiciansBelieving that her talent could be advanced through the study of fine arts, sheenrolled in college and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Arizona where she also studied graphic design. After graduating, Dawn worked as a graphic designer for American West magazine in Tucson, Advertising agencies and businesses in Philadelphia, New York City and New Jersey. To better sate her creative appetite, she painted and drew realistic images in her spare time, which was limited as she tended to her growing family. In 2011, her children now grown, Dawn became restless and unsatisfied with her traditional approach to art.Anxious to experiment with something different, she decided to try a class inLyrical Abstract Painting, which stresses the personal expression of the painter through the use of shape, lor, line and texture in non-representational forms. This genre of painting clicked for Dawn as she was liberated from the precision that realism demanded. Abstract painting better suited her admittedly unfocused, pinball machine like consciousness. Adding to the excitement of finding this style is Dawn’s ability once again to integrate art and music. With the music turned up loud, she is inspired to put brush and paint to canvas. Studying with James Kent, Dawn continues with her unique Lyrical Abstract Painting, which manifests her love for musicand art in a non-representational form.
Artist Statement
My consciousness of experience is not lineal. It starts, stops, detours, curves,
zig zags, slows and accelerates, confuses. It streams from reality to reverie.
My painting captures my experiences.
Picasso said: “The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the
place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web”.
For me, it’s all those things and more.
Music plays an influential role in my lyrical abstract paintings.
The rhythm and beat guide me as I lay on texture and depth and color and hope.
I love the physical act of putting brush, charcoal, pencil and pastel to the canvas.
One long swift movement and I have a shape that compels me to move forward.
I put on some music, turn it up loud, and paint.
The 6 Panel installation in the Media center is titled “ Passages”. Dawn says she was listening to a punk band called The Black Lips, also The Clash, Alt-J and The Strokes.

With the Help of Trish Oliphant class of 76 , it was decided that the artists would paint on 30x 40 wraparound canvases in the medium of their choice. The year of the production is prominently displayed, but with the artists themselves had free reign to use their own personal style.. This way not only do we honor the plays themselves but also the artists.. With The Help of Ms. Lynn Fisher of the Art Department at CRHS, Canvases were completed by fourteen students. There were alumni from the classes of 1976,1988,1993 and 2003.completing additional canvases . 32 Canvases in total were painted and then hung by Class of 1974 Alumnus Loren Adrian. A GIFT OF ART SUPPLIES
In November of 2015, during the dedication of the Arts in the Media Center,We were approached by Thomas Wilson, class of '76. Tom was in a unique situation. The company that he worked for ColArt of America is a distributer of high end art supplies. It seems that in business' like this, they often have products that they can no longer sell but are still in great shape and they just sit in a warehouse. Tom asked us if we wanted a donation and of course we said YES! Over the course of the following year we received many pallets of art supplies. Of which we donated 90 percent to the CR art department, Art teachers Lynn Fisher and Jennifer Cerami then distributed portions to the middle school. The Alumni association also donated supplies to the 5th and 6th grades in Bayville through Dorothy Meelheim and to The Special needs classes here at CR through Patty Fortus. The artists whose works are represented in the media center also received donations of art supplies and We donated some to the Lacey HS art department. We are very pleased to see what the students have been doing with the art supplies that they otherwise would not have had.
If you have a company or are employed by a business that has a similar situation, Salvage or excess product of any kind.. please contact us, Waste not want not!
art displayed at teen arts produced with supplies donated by Thomas Wilson class of 76 to the alumni association and then given to The CR art department.. very impressive what the students can do with top quality materials
