Cayuga Bird Club Monthly Meeting
January 13, 2024 at Cornell Lab of Ornithology auditorium.
Attendance: 66, which was practically standing room only by starting time.
Tonight’s business meeting began at 7:30pm and was very short. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, the microphone was not working, so everyone had to speak up. As 26 photo presenters had 3 minutes each to share their 5 photos, time ran out for the monthly Reading of List, which would have been done at the end by Jody Enck. Three attendees raised their hands as first timers and were welcomed. December’s minutes were approved as written.
Just a reminder, everyone can access the meeting minutes on the cayugabirdclub.org Home Page
via the “See Meetings and Speakers Page” link.
Wayne Gottlieb was thanked for providing cookies. There was no sign up sheet available so hopefully there will be cookies at the February meeting.

Upcoming CBC Field Trip
We have one field trip on the books for January 25 at 9am, weather permitting. Suan Yong will lead attendees to look for winter birds. Meet at Stewart Park's east end parking lot (turn right as you enter the park), and either go for a walk looking for waterfowl, or carpool to look for some nearby winter visitors. Dress for the weather. RSVP to Suan at suan.yong@gmail.com to be notified of potential last-minute changes (e.g., due to weather), or check the Cayuga Bird Club calendar for updates. Stephanie reported that year’s January Winter Bird Field Trip attracted 3 participants. It was freezing but great!

Share Your Photos Night!
And now, tonight’s presentation!
In the early days of Share Your Photos Night, Cayuga Bird Club members would bring 5 physical SLIDES to share in one meeting a year.
Sadly, that tradition paused somewhere in the 1990s, when the main contributor passed away.
Meanwhile, Kevin McGowan, who had already been super into sharing photographs, started putting digital photos on the internet in the mid 1990s, starting with scanned images.
He got his first digital camera in 2000, and with his son, Jay, began posting digiscoped bird photos on the web right away, mixing local rare birds with museum collections.
In early 2004 he created some web pages for the Cayuga Bird Club where people could share their bird photographs.
Right away, it was a huge hit.
From there, it seemed a natural progression and, according to old newsletters, somewhere around 2007 Kevin decided to revitalize the Cayuga Bird Club tradition of sharing bird photographs once a year.
This now-19-year-old event has been popular ever since, and Kevin is once again glad to help make it happen. So a warm welcome and thanks for our host tonight, Kevin McGowan.
Kevin began at 7:33pm with the ground rules, maximum of 5 photos, maximum of 3 minutes per presenter, and Speak Up! As Kevin called each participant up, he named who would be next up. Kevin attempted to go in alphabetical order, except for starting with Yong.
