In diagnostic ultrasound, temporal intensity describes how the intensity of the sound varies in TIME.
This is important because in pulsed ultrasound, the intensity of the sound varies both within each pulse and also between pulses. As a result, there are three temporal intensities that are used:
Temporal peak (TP)
Pulse average (PA)
Temporal average (TA)
Of these three temporal intensities, TP is always the highest, TA is always the lowest, and PA is in between.
