CLASS ACTIVITIES
During our four-year study in CPHK, our Class Association has organized a lot of activities. Can you remember those enjoyable moments? Let me give you a brief summary below.
SOCIAL GATHERING 21/11/86
Venue: Table Tennis Room, Mongkok campus
Remember the days when we were all new to the City Poly? The social gathering was the first activity organized by the Class Association - a very successful function that brought us together, to get to know each other better.
Some 30 of us were brought into the Table Tennis Room that evening. I betted at that time at least half of the participants did not know the other half's names.
Could you recall the names of games we had played ? Gas, Tommy, Wai , etc played the "dwarf" show. Loka and Control showed off their novice dancing skills while Yiu and Jade played the guitar (at that time, Jade was still wearing his waterfall-like long hair!)
it was a splendid evening, wasn't it?
SINGING CONTEST 11/86
Venue: LT1, CPHK Mongkok Campus
Singing Contest - that's the first competition we joined in the City Polytechnic. Remembered the time that we tried to choose the most suitable song from piles of song books? Finally, "Yesterday" was picked "with no objection".
Due to the workload of assignments, we could only have a few rehearsals before the contest. Though we neither had nice voices nor good techniques in singing, we tried our best to achieve it.
Perhaps what we had lost was the champion in the singing contest. We won the friendship.
CLASS PICNIC 22/12/86
Venue: Tai Mei Tuk
That was the first class barbecue. Nice weather, splendid guys, delicious food and wonderful scenery, making it a happy day.
Some 30 of our class gathered at the Tai Po KCR station in the morning, waiting to shape a wonderful day. We got it! We not only enjoyed the fun of eating but also that of kicking the feather, cycling and chatting with other guys.
Last but the most memorable moment was that we sang in the bus on the trip back.
Everybody had a wonderful dinner as well because, by coincidence, that day was also the Chinese Winter-Coming day.
CAMP
Venue: Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung
Imagined how enjoyable the camp was, that we decided to turn this activity into an annual class tradition ?!
Again, some 30 of us (seemed a fairly consistent figure for class activities) participated in the camp. The sufficient facilities plus the active participation of the class had left us many unforgetable moments.
In the first day, some of the gang had Canadian canoeing. They came back with wet hairs and bodies. Some had archery, rope games, skating, etc. At the evening, we held a barbecue just next to a river.
The second day we had a small soccer match, although cannot remember who played. Again, followed by some other games provided by the resort.
To those who were there, still recall the magic moments? To those who were not, feel the joy with us!
PRIZE PRESENTATION AND SOCIAL GATHERING
Venue: 6XX, Mongkok Campus
Shortly after the end of the first Computer Olympic, we had a simple prize presentation ceremony with a social gathering.
The games in the Computer Olympic were terrific already, the prize presentation is just so right in place to be a supplementary ending to it.
Dan did a nice job organizing the activities and holding it. Thanks to Gary for his help in preparing the medals. Group 4 won the overall champion of that year. Good job!
Some games were played, followed by the serve of some snacks. The most memorable performance was by Gilbert and Raymond (Fat) who imitated a famous combination -- Tak Ming Yan Pi.
Also one encouraging information was that the participation rate was unexpectedly high - only 2 classmate did not played. Astonishing cooperation spirit, feel it ?
FROM PD TO BSC
Look backwards, I guess at least someone will agree with me this conversion resulted or will result a change of fate to their future careers. Although the Polytechnic and the department had put the most effort into it, I would not say we contribute nothing to its success.
During the visit of the CNAA (Council of national Academic Awards), the Class Association arranged a group of classmates to perform some laboratory demonstrations to the visitors. Simon and Kwai attended a group interview session with the visitors, answered some questions raised by the assessors and projected some of our insights into the course as well.
That coming summer that course was formally converted to a BSc course with a fresh course code 5421 with some modifications on the modules. One big change was that we had to attend evening course during the placement period.
From a solely British qualification to an internationally recognized one. I hope all of us could make the best of it.
CLASS PICNIC
Venue: Tai O Mun
A nice day for flying kite, though the attendance was not very satisfactory. Perhaps the classmates were too busy digging into their final year projects and the Class Association did not do a good job in putting the classmates together.
Anyway, some 11 of us apppeared at Tai O Mun, barbecue first, flew the kite afterwards.
PICNIC - MA LIU SUI (7/87)
After the of examination of term 3 in year 1, a picnic was planned to be held at Ma Liu Sui in July. But as the picnic was planned during the term break, it was difficult to promote and the response was not very good.
At the day of the picnic, only 4 of our classmates presented themselves at the place of gathering. Since the number of participants was so small, the event was cancelled. This should be the most unsuccessful event held by our class and we learned a lesson that more promotion should be made for other events that follows.
PICNIC - NAM SHAN (12/87)
The second picnic held by the class association was held in the term break after term 1 of year 2. The place chosen this time was Nam Shan in Lantau Island. The picnic was in the form of barbecue.
We gathered ourselves at the pier at Central and started off our trip by ferry. On the ferry, some of us spent their time to have their breakfast, to play card games and to make use of this opportunities to chat with others.
After arriving at the Lantau Island, we took a bus to reach our destination, Nam Shan. Since that day was not a public holiday, we could easily find a place with both barbecue sites and place for group activities.
We spent the first part of our picnic in barbecue. After that, we started to play some games and then we took some group photographs. We all enjoyed very much from the games. We left the place when the evening came.
CAMP (LADY MACLEHOSE HOLIDY VILLAGE (3/88)
Following the convention in year 1, our class organized a camp at the Lady Maclehose Resort House during the term break between term 2 and term 3 in Year 2.
We were first gathered at the Sai Kung bus terminus in the morning of that day, then we took the bus provided by the resort house to the camping site. After settling down, we took the lunch provided.
In the afternoon and at night, there are some pre-arranged facilities provided to us, such as archery, net climbing, badminton, squash, table-tennis, American pool etc. We could also use the water sports facilities in the nearby Chong Hing Water Sports Centre. After taking our baths at the evening, we still had some free time to do our own activities. Most of us took this opportunity to talk to their favourite classmates.
At the next morning after taking our breakfast, we spent the morning doing similar activities as the previous day. We left the camp site.
PRIZE PRESENTATION + SOCIAL GATHERING (89/3/18)
The second Computer Olympics was held during the end of term 2 and early term 3 of our year 2 life. After matches of exciting competition, the winners were born and the prizes were awarded to the winners at the prize presentation held on 18th of March, 1989. As we all had to work during the placement period, the preparation for the prize presentation was slower than the previous year and thus the date was later than the previous year.
The prize presentation was held at a classroom at 6/F of the Argyle campus. The prize presentation was preceded by a social gathering of our class. In the gathering, we first started with some snacks, then various games were played by the participants, one of which is the 'pyramid', we enjoyed much from the gathering. After enjoying ourselves in the gathering, the prizes for the winners in the 2nd Computer Olympics were presented.
PLACEMENT
Our course is the only sandwich course in the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong and our class is the first class to have a one year placement, I am sure that this placement period was memorable to all of you. But do you still remember how the placement was started?
The preparation for the placement was started around February of 1988 where details for the placement was introduced by our placement coordinator Mrs. Lulu Wong. Afterwards we were taught to write a resume to the employers before the interviews.
The first batch of students selected were interviewed by the Hong Kong Bank and IBM, which was held in late March. Those interviewed by IBM had their interviews held at the campus whereas those interviewed by Hong Kong Bank was interviewed in the company's head quarter in Central. The results of these interviews were released in April and nearly half of our class were employed by them.
After this batch of interview, other interviews were followed, but in smaller scale compared with the first batch. The interviews took place between April and June and the whole class had secured a place for placement before July. Most of our class had started their placement period in July with a few started in August. The duration of the placement is about one year, but some had only 11 months. On the other hand, some of our classmates had extended their placement period by one to three months to earn more money.
CAMPUS MOVEMENT
When the City Polytechnic first admitted students in 1984, the permanent campus had just started the planning for construction, therefore a place is needed to be used as the temporary campus. As a result, the Argyle Centre Tower II was chosen as the temporary campus.
Due to the limited space in the temporary campus, the number of courses offered and the students admitted is much smaller compared with now. Also, the facilities and resources for academic purpose is not enough (remember those days where the lift lobby at 10/F was used as the terminal room?), let alone any amenities facilities for us.
Initially, the permanent campus was planned to be completed in 1988, but due to labour shortage in Hong Kong, only part of it could be completed. Phase IA was completed in October 1988 (the current green zone area). Some departments, including ours, were moved to the new campus at that time.
Since both campus coexists, the lecturers had to travel between the campuses via shuttle buses to deliver their lectures and tutorials at the right place. In addition, CPHK became the first T1 link user in Hong Kong. The link was used to network the computer facilities in the two campuses.
Phase IIB was planned to be completed in 1989, but also due to shortage of labour, the amenities building was not completed in time. Even though the amenities building was not completed, the permanent campus was officially opened on 5th January, 1990.
The amenities facilities (canteen, sports complex, swimming pool etc.) were opened progressively between March and August, but up to now, some facilities are still not available (such as the Health Centre).
With the completion of such well equipped campus, it is expected the students can gained a lot more than us in their tertiary education life.
CAMP - LADY MACLEHOSE HOLIDAY VILLAGE (Term break, 3/90)
After the interruption of the placement, our annual class camp was held during the term break in March of our final year.
The location chosen was the same as in Year 2 -- the Lady Maclehose Holiday Village. The participation rate was extremely high this time - over 50 of our classmates had attended.
We first gathered at the Sai Kung bus terminal, and then took the shuttle bus provided by the village to reach the site. After having our lunch, we divided the houses ourselves and started our activities. Activities available in the village included badminton, squash, American pool, football machine, roller and archery.
After enjoying one afternoon's activities and our supper, the class gathering was held at a covered playground inside camp. In the gathering, we were divided into groups and various games were played. We all enjoyed ourselves very much in the games. Following the games, we moved ourselves to the roller pitch and started our 'karaoke' session. We took this opportunities to sing our favourite songs with our classmates.
Some classmates, such as Chan Tat Yee and Sandy Ho, had their Solo with their favourite songs. After this, we returned to our houses to have individual activities: some continued their 'Karaoke', some played cards and some chatted with their good friends.
In the next morning, we played the activities provided by the village again as the day before, but with one more choice: net climbing. After having our lunch and taking our class photos, we left the village and ended our wonderful trip.
