New Ostering: It is located on the southern bank of the River Turen, a tributary of the River Nyra. The estate and attached settlements are only twenty-five miles from the current border with the Dark Empire. The manor house granted to House Caratillus by HRM King Hesketos I the Wise was built a couple centuries ago, but remains in solid shape. The manor has enough attached peasant households in the surrounding villages to support the martial activities of the family - but only just. The manor house (which has been the family home for as long as any of you have been around) has never been luxurious or showy. It is a reasonably typical manor house in a traditional Nyremian style... simple, easy to defend, and humble. The only addition to the existing plan is the "Lesser Hall". As an exiled Earl, Lord Caratillus entertains higher status guests than the typical country gentleman who would live in such a manor house. Theaccommodations were thus improved upon.
Lord and Lady Caratillus reside here, a considerable step down from their former status in Old Anadastros. The retainer's hall is where the eldest daughter resides, as she is currently the Caratillus offensive contribution to Nyremi. Lord Caratillus only has two guards in his service, and they reside in the tower, which serves as barracks. You all live well enough but this is a functional place with little thought going into decoration. The stone wall has a walkway for defensive archery, but no real battlements. There is a minstrel’s gallery at one end of the main room, and the kitchen has an elaborate pulley-and-spit system for roasting large animals on the fire.
The Region Around the Manor: The area is known as the Nyra Turn by the locals. The region is not very highly populated, having no cities and few towns. Tracks and roads crisscross the county, but none of them are paved or metalled as they are in more civilized lands. Settlements large enough to merit being called a village are miles apart, though numerous small homesteads and thorps can be found within a mile of any roadway. About half of the named villages are large enough to support a lord. Most are simply run in the Earl's name.
Most of the larger settlements are actually just close clusters of settlements surrounding something like a bridge, a fort, or something like that. The major settlements include:
"Danilov and Klezno", two villages linked by a large wood and stone bridge, site of the largest monthly market in the county
"The Mekranovs", two small towns linked by a stone bridge, county seat where the local Earl holds court.
Swampwicz, border fort guarding a stone bridge leading to Vorokhoi-occupied Old Anadastros. The town of Marshyards is the closest Vorokhoi town.
Pelost, border fort further north and associated settlements.
