North of the Keller Lands, across the story expanse of the Hillayet Sea, lie the "Northlands". This vast, mostly unpopulated wilderness is a mix of polar icecaps, frozen tundra, and dense woodlands. The region is actually a huge peninsula, separated by a mountain range called Frostwall running across the narrow Isthmus of Hillas. Beyond the Frostwall, the land is little known, regarded as trackless empty wastelands by the civilized lands to the south. In fact, there are many inhabitants - some human, some not. In general, the Northlands are split in half by a series of mountain ranges running east to west. North of these mountains, the land is generally either polar icecap, glaciers, or flat and frozen tundra. South of the mountain ranges, the terrain is hilly and covered with thick coniferous forests. Indeed, the forested areas are a primary source of furs and timber for the Keller Lands to the south. The mountains tend to be moderately sized, with few spectacular peaks, due to glacial erosion. In a few places, active volcanoes make the terrain and life around them more varied than the rest of the surrounding terrain. The human population of the Northlands is mixed between several groups. Most of the population is ethnically Noladen. These people tend to live in small settlements organized by clan or tribe, and are generally considered "barbarians" by the Keller. In the far western areas, coastal regions are inhabited by people related to the barbarian tribes to the west of the Pershamon Empire. These people eke out a harsh living as hunters and fishermen, occasionally trading with neighbors. To the far east, a few clans of Yanoshi, mostly those on the losing side of clan wars, have established fortified settlements and are slowly expanding into the wilderness. The southern coastal regions are largely dominated by a chain of small ethnic Keller states. The non-human population includes a larger number of orcs and ogres than the civilized parts of the world - they tend to thrive in the wilderness, competing with the Noladen tribes. Goblinoids of various sorts, most commonly bugbears, can also be found in somewhat smaller numbers here. A few small Dwarven kingdoms exist where mountains run near a coastline, but they tend to be smaller in number than those in the FarSpar Range to the south.
The following geographical features of the Northlands bear further elaboration:
Hillayet Sea - A thousand miles wide, and two thousand miles long, the Hillayet Sea is a major barrier to travel from the Northland to the Keller Lands. The western end is a bit shallower and more sheltered, but coastal settlements of all sorts are frequently raided by seaborne bandits from Frostwall and Jotun March. Likewise, the militant Nonadir Heirate has been known to make slave raids along the coasts. Towards the east, the waters are deeper and more open, leading to rougher weather. The straits to both sides of Kathros Isle are generally regarded as the boundary of the Hillayet Sea.
Hillayet Confederation - The Hillayet Confederation was originally a series of small colonies established by emigrants from the Keller Empire, Selectionist survivors of the post civil war chaos. Over time, the colonies have developed into a loose collection of independent fortified towns, all linked by treaty, common culture, and common threats. The Hillayet Confederation pays a substantial tribute each year to the Keller Empire, in timber, furs, and slaves. In exchange, the Keller Empire recognizes their independence and allows them to exist. The Confederation maintains a small navy and army made up of forces contributed by the member towns. It also maintains close ties to Durham, being one of their main customers for large-bore guns. The Confederation has expanded inland to the foothills of the Gresset Mountains, impinging on both Dwarven territory and the hunting grounds of several orc tribes as a result, its northern edge is an active three way war zone. Life in the Confederation is rough and cold, but its people are possibly the most free civilized people on Aestas.
Sea of Storms - A tributary sea of the Hillayet Sea, the "Sea of Storms" so named for the freakishly violent weather which plagues it. A combination of weather patterns and water currents combine to produce sudden storms and dangerously high waves most of the year. Along the coasts, shoals, cliffs, and submerged volcanoes conspire to make travel extremely dangerous. Nevertheless, rich fishing and the extremely productive gold and silver mines along the northern coast lead people to risk the trip. Most never make it out alive. The entire sea is claimed by the Kingdom of Storms, but vessels from all around the Hillayet Sea can be found here.
Kingdom of Storms - The Kingdom of Storms is an oddity in the Known World, a mix of orcs and humans. Centuries ago, when a tribe of Noladens and a tribe of Orcs banded together to defeat a greater threat from goblinoids, they established a line of kinship between the groups that has lasted to this day. The rulers are a dynasty of half-orcs, with a small leavening of Ogre blood. As a result, "Stormers" tend to be strong, tough, and violent, but not especially intellectual. Nevertheless, it somehow works. Humans and orcs make up about a quarter of the population each, half-orcs make up about 40%, with about one in ten being some form of Ogre. The current monarch, King Ranghok Crackskull, is nearly seven feet tall. His personal bodyguard, spouses, and family include members of human and orcish extraction. The pride of the Kingdom is undoubtedly their ogre heavy infantry, one of the few outside of Keller Imperial service, all of which are related to the royal family. Despite its small size, the Kingdom of Storms claims the entire Sea of Storms as its territory. Yanoshi Colonies - On the far eastern extremity of the Northlands, the Yanoshi have built four fortified towns, one for each of the exiled clans. These Yanoshi clans are attempting to conquer the Northlands for their own. Their opponents were initially goblinoids and Noladen tribesmen, hardly worthy foes. However, upon reaching the unnamed coastal mountain ranges to the west, they encountered several Dwarven kingdoms, finally providing them the glorious warfare they sought. making matters stranger, Yanoshi scouts and raiders have encountered the expanding Kingdom of Storms, leading to extended bloody fighting in the primeval forests between the Yanoshi and the Stormers. Oddly, both sides are looking forward to the battles.
