Find Knife in Old Church

Thirty-seven years ago B. J. Britson lost a putty knife between the boards of a partition in the Bergen church while it was being remodeled. Tuesday this week that particular partition was being torn down by workmen, so Mr. Britson looked between the boards and found the knife where it had been all these years, just as good as the day it was lost. Mr. Britson was puttying cracks between boards in the partition in the front part of the church when he lost the knife. (from Roland Record 2/6, 1930)

Bell from East Bergen

The bell that hung in the East Bergen Church went to Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg by recommendation of the Johnson Brothers - somewhere around 1950-51. (taken from the Bethany Lutheran Church book "A Centennial History 1893-1993)

Old Corn Stalks

Souvenir hunters have been busy this week picking up corn stalks on the ground under Bergen Church which is being moved this week, these stalks being 56 years old, having been under the church during all this time. The old Bergen Church was built in 1874, the ground being a corn field the year before, and now when the church was moved many of the stalks were found as intact and strong as if they had been there only a year or two. The corn was planted in the spring of 1873 by M. Hegland, who is now 84 years old, the land belonging to his father, Ole Hegland (Dahl) who lived on the place in the west edge of town tenanted by M. J. Rod at the present time. (from Roland Record April 11, 1929)
