George Andrew

George Andrew Barkley (1826-1913) married Edith Perkins (1835-1919)

George married his cousin, daughter of Jane Hornby Barkley and Charles Perkins, at St George, Hanover Square, London in 1859.

George Andrew Barkley was a civil engineer who worked with his older brother building railways in the Ottoman Empire. Two of his children were born in Switzerland; George spoke several languages and had business interests in Europe.

In 1878 he made a journey on horseback “though Asia Minor and Armenia” with his brother Henry.

George Andrew Barkley was a business partner of the well-known railway engineer Charles Liddell. They were both shareholders in the Danube and Black Sea Railway Company and Kustendjie Harbour Company. He was President of the Institution of Civil Engineers from 1891 to 1892.

1. Henry Yarker Barkley (1861-1895) – no further information.

2. Margaret Jane Barkley (1862-1928) married Holt Waring Ridley (1852-1910) in London in 1892.

Hold Waring Ridley was the son of Colonel John Henry Ellis Ridley (1816-1892) and Anna Maria Brooke (1824-1910). In the 1881 and 1891 censuses he is listed as a merchant of Ceylon and a coffee and tea planter living in Tormoham (Torquay) Devon. By 1901 he is living at Broughton Hall in Staffordshire. Broughton Hall is now the home of a mobile phone company millionaire who says the place is haunted. The story is that no elder son will live to inherit it. I am aware of Holt Waring Ridley and Margaret Barkley having one son who died in infancy.

John George Barkley was a railway engineer who spent most of his life working in India and China. He and his wife both died in London, both quite young and within a few weeks of each other.
