Charles Francis

Charles Francis Barkley (1808-1845) married Anne Elizabeth Murray (1813-1895)

Anne Elizabeth Murray was born in Jamaica, the daughter of Robert Murray (1763-1820) and Ann Brown McCook (1792-1876). Robert Murray owned the the Knapdale Estate in St Ann. He died at sea travelling from Jamaica to the UK in 1820. In 1840 Ann Brown married Major George Nugent (1794-1878). He is recorded as having fought heroically at the Battle of Waterloo, taking part in four cavalry charges. In retirement they lived in Lillington, a suburb of Leamington Spa.

Charles Francis and Anne Elizabeth Murray were married in Brighton on 26th July 1836. In his will Charles Francis is described as being from Brighton, Sussex. Other documents state that his residence was Halliford House, Sunbury-on-Thames, a house inherited from his uncle, John Barkley, who had inherited it from his uncle, the lawyer William Barkley.

Charles Francis was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1823 and called to the Bar in 1833. He practised as a barrister on the Northern Circuit. He attempted to become a Member of Parliament for York in 1835. He failed. A subsequent petition alleged that his opponent had bribed electors. His early death in Dresden, Germany, was the result of contracting typhus fever  After her husband's death Anne Elizabeth lived in Kent and Sussex. The 1851 census records Anne Elizabeth visiting William Lyall, Dean of Canterbury, while her young daughter is staying with her Aunt Martha in Box, Wiltshire.

Charles Francis and Annie Elizabeth had just one child.
