Take Note: This race originated and was created upon Alternate Earth. Those infected can be from other planets. However, they have only become infected in the last 1,000 years.
Believed to be born from an intentional virus called VE142 that was created by the government and distributed through the primary water source. It is a well-guarded secret, even among the vampire community, that vampires have existed far longer than believed.
VE142 was modeled after plagues and other viruses of previous centuries; it was meant to thin down the population of Earth. Instead, the virus began attacking individual hosts’ bodies, causing the body’s systems to mutate once clinically dead only to return as something foreign. Creating a life that is undetectable by any medical system, and so they were declared the undead, or damned. These new creatures had many enhancements compared to their weaker living counterparts, but they also developed a craving for blood and sensitivity to sunlight. This adversity is not as extreme as myth would have you believe. Vampires can live openly in sunlight; they can mask themselves as a normal humanoid being. They simply prefer darkness as opposed to light, and prolonged overexposure to sunlight may cause sun-sickness or any other variant of effects on a vampire.
No longer able to walk in the light as they once had, vampires exist mostly in shadow and darkness. They are masters of illusion and trickery. Some of the most beautiful, graceful beings you would ever see. Which also makes them most dangerous. No longer bound to the light they live shrouded in darkness, it's believed that this is what makes them evil, what allows them to walk where others fear, and to use the shadows in our minds to ensure their survival.
Vampires are a well-kept Project secret, thought to be only a myth by the population as a whole. They were often hunted down and killed by the very organization that created them. Especially if it seemed that something done within the vampire community was exceptionally newsworthy. And though vampires are often vain creatures, they kept their true identities hidden from the civilian population. This allowed them general anonymity and gave them the ability to hunt down their victims with relative ease.
However, during the last days upon Alternate Earth, many vampires took advantage of the chaos that ensued, exposing themselves to the general populace. These open attacks resulted in the additional exposure of another creature believed created from the VE142 virus, werebeasts, who broke their silence to offer assistance to the humanoid population. This resulted in very few vampires or werebeasts making it off of Alternate Earth.
Vampires and werebeasts have always hated one another, resulting in a private war brewing between the two races. Vampires believe that werebeasts are inferior and often try to force them into servitude. If such is not possible, they are just as happy to see one less mongrel littering the streets.
Though most Earthlings were exposed to the VE142 virus through the water supply, this is not the case for everyone. However, it is a rare few that have the right makeup to mutate. Furthermore, not everyone that was exposed the first time mutated, though they might have the potential to do so given the right circumstances. The VE142 virus is transferred through bite for both vampires and werebeasts. But it should also be noted that though someone has the potential to turn, this does not mean they will necessarily survive the process. The virus attacks viciously, and in many cases, the host’s body simply isn’t hardy enough to withstand the first change. Even vampires, in this case, do not come back to life.
