Step 3: Digging, Collecting and Cataloguing Samples

In this step, your team will be attributed one of the Archaeologic Sites prepared by the other teams. You will follow the usual procedures to localize, collect and catalogue samples.

Procedures

1) Mark your excavation site with a string grid, as seen in the photography. This should have a rectangular shape, with the dimensions proposed in the Site Grid: 4x3 meters perimeter, divided in 12 square sections of 1x1 meters.

2) Fill in the Site Grid; fill the name of the Excavation Site (Armshtadt + (number ) + (greek letter) and the orientation of the site with the help of a compass, to correctly identify each section.

3) Dig in a sistematic way, from one section to the next one. When you think you find an evidence, mark its position in the Site Grid, fill the Evidence Form and keep toghether inside a plastic bag both the evidence and the Evidence Form. Take photos when necessary.

Be sure to identify both in the Site Grid and the Evidence Form the localization of the evidence (Armshtadt + (number) + (greek letter) + coordinates. (i.e.: Armshtadt4BetaC2).

Resources

Materials

    • 35 meters of string.
    • 8 30x20 cm (or similar) hermetic transparent plastic bags.
    • 4 ribs (one for each coin) to attach the string.
    • compass (most smartphones have one).

At the end of this step, include in your Excavation Diary a text with your impressions about archaeologic work and your firsts impressions about your excavation site. Make a first hypothesis about which could be the hominid of this site and from what evidences do you extract this preliminary conclusion.
