Languages & Cultures: Outreach examples seen in other countries.
:: About international education efforts to classrooms & the general public
Interest and expertise in foreign languages and societies for people living in the USA has been cultivated since 1958 with the creation of the National Resource Centers and Language Resource Centers. It began in reaction to the Russian success of the Sputnik satellite in 1957. A similar realization of insufficient foreign language and area studies capacity came from the Sepember 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with the result that more funding was added.
In other countries around the world is there anything analogous to this national effort in the USA to equip its citizens with knowledge of the outside world –not only expertise for professionals and specialists, but also through outreach to schools and to the general public?
