annual meeting: W 11/28 (aec forum), F 8-11 business mtg, 1-3 posters (Sat. SEAA)
#update of AEC/CAE collaboration at AAA meeting. G. Witteveen, others
# per Guven's email - I feel we need to do more; show more visible results
Does AEC want to serve as bridge between multiple AAA sections and the growing fields of FLL and Study Abroad?
Typically the useful Local Knowledge is diffused across many sources and experiences - first, second and third hand.
Our task is to create a model of concise, essential insights to learning THAT language, social proficiency, cultural literacy
The difference to a tourist book or a FLL textbook is that we incorporate some anthropological tools: context, emic/etic, material culture, intercultural communication
----------> AEC is well engaged on several fronts so this impactful project to build cultural sophistication among young people will have to wait. But others may seek help within other sections they belong to in order to create models.
Guven will try to promote the project for East Asia in the SEAA section.
# NCSS >sig? Exhibit hall presence? SAE/NPS/Bureau of Land Mgmt ==>
----------> Guven will consult with NCSS exec director, Susan Griffin for advice about developing a S.I.G., and find other ways to introduce anthro ideas and opportunities to NCSS members
# Suggestion [not included during phone conference]: offer or request people attending the annual meeting to do a 60-90 SECOND of their research problem and some outcomes, findings or issues of consequence.
# Local teacher's waiver to attend the AAA.
----------> Guven, before the next AEC phone conference will:
--follow the model from last fall: contacting schools from the districts that surround Washington, DC (Colleen list?/point of contact; SI anthroNews; NMAI list; Ann Kaupp/SACC contacts)
--will confirm total numbers (first come, first served)
--will review responses from the San Jose attendees
# review cycle of waivers/hosting teachers: do film references, exhibitor names, session titles (CAE &c), promo via Ann Kaupp & nmai
