Travel and Backpacking With Dogs

How to travel with dogs? How to backpack with dogs?

It can be lots of fun to bring your dog along on the trip.

I have also created another article about all types of travel with your dog.

HOTELS: Finding hotels that allow dogs to stay on the trip can be a challenge. In the US, La Quinta Hotels and Motel 6 allow you to bring your dog for no additional charge. I have to admit we have had to sneak our dog into a few hotels in the US. When we were traveling in Europe (Germany, Check Republic, Switzerland, Austria) It seemed that almost all the hotels allowed dogs. In Europe, dogs were allowed many other places and allowed on the trains and buses. In some countries they needed to be muzzled. Look where you are going ahead of time and check that the hotels are dog friendly.

TRAILS AND PARKS: The US National Forests generally allow you to bring dogs on the trail and to backpack. The US National Parks Generally don't allow dogs on the trail. There are some exceptions - In Grand Canyon Nationals Park you are allowed to take your dog on the many trails along the canyon rim.

BACKPACKING: Our dog has loved the backpacking trips she has gone on with us. Dried dog food is the type should bring because it is much lighter to carry. It's really no trouble to bring your dog along on the trail. Please carry a leash so you can put your dog on a leash when needed. When horses are near please stand well off the trail because dogs can spook horses.
