Mystery River is a problem based learning experience. It is designed to help students learn new information in a way that is very similar to real-world situations. In Mystery River, students have the opportunity to learn about public stream water quality, endangered species, governmental problem solving, social science and systems, and public speaking.
The goals for students are to:
Problem Solving:
1. explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas or technical text based on specific information in the text (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.3)
2. analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences in the point of view they represent. (CCSS.ELA-Literacy. RI.5.6)
3. use sources of information to research a topic and apply this research to a final presentation.
4. develop initiative and demonstrate self-direction in activities (21st century skill)
5. demonstrate presentation skills: use of visual aids, eye contact, proper volume and rate of speech.
6. draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.7)
7. integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.9)
