The Awesome Math unit acquaints students with strategies used to solve process problems in mathematics. It is designed to introduce, review, and reinforce the students’ problem solving skills. Math topics included in the unit are: percent, figuring scale, estimation, negative numbers, division, figuring speed/distance/time, figuring/converting weight, algebra, squares and square roots, geometric formulas, and decimals.
Student Learning Goals/"I CAN" statements are:
Problem Solving:
2. Stick with a problem until I have a solution.
3. Explain how I solved a problem verbally and in writing.
4. Check to see if my answers are reasonable and complete.
5. Create charts, graphs, diagrams, tables and pictures as part of the problem solving process
Vocabulary:
1. Define terms and concepts in my own words.
Numbers and Operations:
1. Accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide to solve a variety of problems.
2. Model equivalent forms of common fractions as a percent.
3. Model at least one method to solve ratio and proportion problems.
4. Use knowledge about negative numbers to solve a problem.
1. Use what I know about math to make sense of and solve a variety of problems.
