Mobile was never represented in the old Pigball League during the days of promotion and relegation, it's top club, Mobile Bay, often playing in southern based regional leagues. The closest the Stingrays ever got to the League was as a member of the Pigball Conference in 1981, when it won the championship, but was rejected by the League by one vote. The Stingrays never got back to the top and by 1994, it was even dropped from the Conference. The introduction of the NPL's new regional structure allowed Mobile to gain representation and it was the Stingrays, over Mobile United, who got the nod.
