The Rules of Pigball(Condensed version)
Section 1. Playing Area-The playing area shall be no more than 360 feet(120 yards) in length and no more than 180 feet(60 yards) wide. Goal areas are to be centered on the two endlines with a 36 by 30 feet area for goalies. Goal nets shall have a maximum width of 24 feet, a maximum depth of 6 feet, and a maximum height of 8 feet. Goal posts are to extend to a maximum height of 30 feet(including the goal below). A semi-arc will be located 20 yards from each goal, goals beyond this arc will count for double value. The blue-lines, 35 yards from each goal will be used to indicate off-sides. A single red-line will mark halfway. All lines are to be 1 yard in thickness. Player areas are to be located on the same sideline and they are to start at the blue lines, heading towards each goal.
Section 2. The Ball-The ball for play shall be a pigball, which shall measure 22-22 1/2" in diameter, 12-13" in length and have 14-15 lbs. of air pressure. The home team shall provide up to 15 balls for play. Should the ball leave the playing area, it must be returned to the field of play.
Section 3. Teams and Players-The game is to be played by a minimum of 1 goalie and 10 action players and a maximum of 1 goalie and 15 action players. The bench shall consist of 1 goalie and up to 15 action players. Free and unlimited substitution of action players is permitted. Any player ejected during the course of a game can be replaced immediately.
Section 4. Equipment and Safety-Each player shall be dressed in this manner: Cap or head-padding (optional), Shirt, Shorts, Socks, and Shoes. Additionally, each player is to have shin protection and a mouth guard. No modification of player equipment is allowed.
Section 5. Officials-Each game is to be officiated by 1 to 3 referees, 2 to 4 line judges, and 2 goal judges. The referee(s) has(have) ultimate authority of game play, including awarding free plays, ejecting players, administering bounce-offs and general oversight of the game. The line judges have authority on calling offsides and administrating throw-ins. The goal judges keep score. Officials' uniforms are to be in colors that do not clash with any teams' base design.
Section 6. Timing-Each game shall consist of 4 20-minute quarters. Breaks will be 5-minutes(between quarters) and 15-minutes(between halves). Each team shall receive 1 timeout per half. Games that are broadcast will have 1 media timeout per quarter. Clock will be operated by a timing judge, and clock will count up on the scoreboard. End of quarters to be signified by a horn.
Section 7. Scoring-Scoring in pigball is as follows:
Major Goal from beyond 20 yards-6 points
Major Goal from within 20 yards-3 points
Minor Goal from beyond 20 yards-2 points
Minor Goal from within 20 yards-1 point
Penalty Conversions-1 point
Scores must be done by kicking, a ball that bounces off the goalpost or crossbar also counts as a score. The team with the most points at the end of the match shall be declared the winner. Should score be tied at the end of regulation time, a one-on-one shootout shall take place. A maximum of five rounds shall take place, with the shootout ending once a team has an insurmountable edge in score. If still tied after five rounds, however, it shall go to a sudden-death shootout. Once there is a difference in scores at the end of a round, the shootout ends and the sudden-death winner will have a point added to it's final score.
Section 8. Ball Movement-The ball may be played by the following methods:
Throwing(overhanded or underhanded; forward or backward);
Kicking;
Handpassing and;
Bouncing.
A player is allowed to run with the ball as long as possible.
Section 9. Offsides-A player is deemed offsides if all of his body is across the edge of the blue line facing the goal he is attempting to score at before the ball. Exemptions are made if a player is pushed across before the ball reaches the blue line. A player carrying the ball across the blue line is not considered in an offside position. unless another player is ahead of him
Section 10. Physical Contact-Players are allowed to make contact with the body by tackling and bumping, but is not allowed to trip nor make initial contact above the shoulder or below the knees. Contact above the shoulders and below the knees is permitted only if initial contact is in the legal area. Statuing is prohibited
Section 11. Free Play-The following is a list of offenses that will result in a free play:
Tackling with the ball;
Tackling without the ball;
Tackling too high;
Tackling too low;
Tripping;
Statuing;
Charging;
Interfering with the ability to receive the ball;
Deliberately forcing the ball out of bounds;
Offside;
Deliberate offside;
Delaying the game;
Hitting a player out of bounds;
Section 12. Disqualification-The following plays may result in disqualification:
Tackling too high;
Tackling too low;
Tripping;
Charging;
Deliberate offside(excessive roughness);
Hitting a player out of bounds;
Unsportsmanlike conduct(Abuse of players, officials, etc.)
Section 13. Captain Guidelines-Each team is to be represented by one captain and two alternate captains. The captains shall meet at the start of the match to participate in the medallion toss. Should any play need explanation by a referee, one captain shall be spoken to.
Section 14. Video Review-The following plays are subject to review:
Offside before a goal is scored;
Interfering with the goaltender;
Ball out of bounds before being kept in;
Determining whether a score should be doubled or not.
A time limit of one minute will be imposed.
