Research has shown that the single greatest factor in predicting reading success is whether a child is read to when they are young. So let's grow our children's brains!
Reading contract: Download
Requirements: Students entering First Grade in the fall are asked to read and record 12 books during the summer.
A list of suggested books is attached. These books are merely suggestions. Please feel free to read any books that are appropriate for your reader. The staff at the public library can also be a good source for book suggestions.
Record Keeping: With your child, fill out a summer reading log for each book. There are 2 logs on each page. Please return the Reading Logs to the English teacher the first week of school*. (View - Download)
Incentive: If all 12 summer reading logs are turned into the English teacher, the child will be awarded 4 “casual dress” stickers. Each of the 4 stickers earns the wearer the privilege of a free casual dress day. The stickers are to be used in September.

Please remember- since your child is attending a French Immersion program, we will not be introducing phonics until 2nd grade. This means your child should not be practicing sounds out words and reading over the summer. Spend this time instead practicing comprehension skills! Remember to ask the hard questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
