In the last module you thought about something that you want to learn, to know more about, or to make a change with. In order to make help set a goal and make a plan to accomplish your goal, we need to know what we ALREADY know.
It's important when we do this that we get as much information as possible. For example, if you want to work on "reading" it's important to know more than just your test scores and reading level. You need to know what specific skills you're good at and what skills are hardest for you. For example:
Do you learn new words easily or are new words hard?
Do your eyes skip between around a lot when you read?
Is it hard to concentrate on what you're reading?
When you read the words off of the page do they make sense?
Can you make a picture in your head using the words?
Do you understand information better when you can hear it and see it at the same time? Can you pull out the important ideas from a text?
Is there something that helps you a lot that you don't do all of the time?
Your objective from the first question is in your SDLMI Goal Page Google Doc under "What do I want to learn?" When you look at your objective what parts of it are your strengths, or things that you're already good at?
Take a minute to jot down some of your strengths, so that you'll remember them.
When you look at your objective, what parts of it do you already know that you need to work on? What things are hard for you to do? What skills do you want to improve?
Take a minute to jot down some of your instructional needs, so that you'll remember them.
After making these lists, you might find that you want some more information. Do you want to know your test scores? Are you interested in your grade on a particular assignment or in a class? Do you have other questions that you want to ask an adult? What are they?
Take a minute to jot down some things that you want to ask about, so that you'll remember them.
Are there specific things that make your objective easier or harder? Do you know that being in a quiet place helps you? Do you do better when you're in a room with a smaller group of students? Do deadlines make school harder for you?
Take a minute to jot down some things that make your objective easier or harder, so that you'll remember them.
Finally, using your answers from above, answer the second question, "What do I know about it now?" in your SDLMI Goal Page Google Doc. If you have questions that you need to have answered, make sure that you work with your teacher to answer them over the next few days. You can always come back to your Google Doc and change your notes.
