In a time before time, a great tragedy befell the world. Only the spires prevented the demise of all of humanity. When the survivors exited the spire, they came upon a remarkable sight: Nyu, the First of the Hantu. Nyu taught them much of the world and how to rebuild civilization. For this reason, Nyu is revered above all other Hantu as the progenitor of the Vionese people. The city of Nyu was raised from the ruins surrounding Vion under the careful guidance of the Hantu. It remains the capital of Vion to this day. From this new center of civilization, the people of Vion spread across the land, learning all there was to know about their new home.
As the Vionese people expanded outwards, they began to encounter more of the Hantu. Similar to how a city arose around Nyu, others were built in proximity to the Hantu as they were encountered. This led to the formation of seven powerful city-states, all of which competed for dominance of the region. They developed distinct cultures and traditions as each strove to adopt the teachings of its Hantu. This led to significant regional tension.
The Vionese people eventually came to blows and a seven way war for dominance of the region began.

In the Spire City Nyu, in a delta where Nyu first spoke to the chosen people, the Council of Seven determines the fate of Vion.
Is ruled by a God King.
The Vionese use glass beads as a form of currency. The clearer, purer, the glass, the more value it holds.
Nyu - [Capital. Central location. Large river connected to the sea.] Nyu benefits from trade from the surrounding states. It's own direct (and mostly uncontested) route to the sea grants it additional flexibility in trade routes and transporting goods.
Idris - [Costal. Between two rivers' floodplains.] Idris is the largest agricultural products producer of Vion. Trades via river to Nyu, by sea with Tarnu and Azhi.
Tarnu - [Island state. Temperate Rainforest.]
Eno - [Nearest Nyu. Mixed biomes.] Several smaller rivers that lead to Azhi and the Ocean
Apep - [Nearest Ayanmo. River route to Nyu. Competes with Imar]
Imar - [The "great plains". Out by itself in a comparatively massive swath of land. Competes with Apep.]
Azhi - [Marshland. Temperate Rainforest.]

The Hantu are self proclaimed guardians of large regions of Vion. They are worshipped as protectors of nature and entities that maintain the balance between nature and the Vionese. The cities of Vion are named for the Hantu that protects it.
The people of the marsh are a tough, pragmatic people, in a tough, challenging environment. Being competitive is encouraged, a trait that wasn't helped by the war for dominance between the city-states. That being said, there is also a strong communal nature and positive value placed on the inter-reliance of people (a tradition carried on from the first expansion out of Nyu).
A few common teachings from Azhi:
No. Do not do the thing. Prevent others from doing the thing, for it is bad.
