Why Have Prerequisites?
Prerequisites are intended to guide students into courses for which they have an appropriate background to understand the content of the course and be able to get the most out of it. Further, prerequisites help the instructor avoid "backtracking" to topics that are normally expected to have been completed in previous courses. The following is what is recommended for this course.
- Suitable experience or a course in cultural anthropology. Students should have a suitable background in studies of human cultures and cultural diversity. At the University of Hawai'i, an appropriate course is ANTH 152 (previously listed as ANTH 200).
- Suitable experience or a course in basic or introductory ethnobotany. Students should have a sound background in the basic topics and theories of ethnobotany. At the University of Hawai`i, an appropriate course is BOT 105: Introductory Ethnobotany.
- Suitable experience or a course in plant classification that includes modern scientific understanding of plant families. Students should have a clear understanding of the scientific basis for plant classification, taxonomy and nomenclature and be able to recognize common plant families. At the University of Hawai'i, an appropriate course is BOT 461: Systematics of Vascular Plants.
