Measuring ecosystem services

General Objectives

Establish that it is difficult for society to make "correct" choices when there are different measures for "success" and "best use."

Strategy

  • Choose a location for which there is a legitimate debate over alternative uses of the landscape (e.g., Ewa Plain: houses vs agriculture).
  • Students form teams and prepare a case for their advocacy.
  • Present case to a panel.

Background

Reading are important so that students know the basic concepts and the specific issues that are involved.

Make sure that there is depth to the considerations:

  • Long-term vs short term
  • Sustainability
  • Location in the context of its surroundings
  • How to express cultural values in a monetized society
