Richmond Company C

Drewry's Bluff/ James River Detachment

The Confederate States Marine Corps (CSMC) was a branch of the Confederate States Navy, which was established by an act of the Congress of the Confederate States

The Congress of the Confederate States was the legislative body of the Confederate States of America, existing during the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865.

On March 16, 1861 the CSMC's manpower was initially authorized at 45 officers and 944 enlisted men. This was increased on September 24, 1862 to 1026 enlisted men. The organization of the corps began at Montgomery, Alabama

The Confederate States Marine Corps was a Confederate Government entity. They were supplied directly from the central government and were not a "militia" unit.

All members were trained to high standards. The unit was not large (Under 600 men) and they were spread throughout the Confederacy and aboard commerce raiders and warships.

Company A, B, and C were stationed in Virginia at Richmond, Camp Beale and along the James River on Drewry's Bluff.

They also were charged with the security of the naval yards and navy bases. All Confederate Marines were trained artillerymen and could man ships guns and shore batteries if needed.

Our group is an extension of the 2nd Texas Cavalry and an alternate impression. All members of this unit are required to have the cavalry "kit" specified in the Uniform Guidelines along with the listed CSMC Uniform and equipment.

The commander of the cavalry is in command of those portraying marines on the field. If the commander is not available, the senior NCO of the marine detachment will take charge and be under the command of the ranking officer in our parent organization the Confederate States Marine Corps National Battalion.
