Coltan Mining in Congo Sparks Environmental and Humanitarian Crisis Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo: Mining for Coltan, a valuable ore needed in the production of many electronic devices have caused significant damage to the countryside, triggering a massive crisis in the area. While production of key ores such as Tantalum remains unaffected, the crisis is likely to contribute drastically to increasing short-term violence as armed groups draw upon miners who are now lacking work. The Congo has immense mineral wealth but has been subject to immense political instability following its independence from Belgium in 1960. UN officials have brought back up the issue of a ban on Coltan mined from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
