12 - The New York Jets win Super Bowl III by defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16-7.
20 - Richard Nixon is sworn in as the 37th President of the United States.
30 - The Beatles give their last public performance, on the roof of Apple Records. The impromptu concert was broken up by the police.
05 - A huge oil slick off the coast of Santa Barbara, California closes the city's harbor.
09 - The Boeing 747 makes its maiden flight.
13 - Scientists in Cambridge (England) announce the first successful in vitro fertilization of a human embryo.
02 - In Toulouse, France the first Concorde test flight is conducted. Setting off from Toulouse the Concorde 001 flew 17 minutes before coming down to land. Seven months later the Concorde went supersonic (faster than the speed of sound) for the first time and five years later, in June 1974, she made her first double Atlantic crossing in one day.
03 - Sirhan Sirhan admits that he killed presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.
17 - Golda Meir becomes the first female prime minister of Israel.
21 - The science fiction television series Star Trek airs its final new episode after being canceled by NBC. In syndication Star Trek becomes one of the century's most successful entertainment franchises.
28 - Former United States General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower dies.
09 - Close to 300 Harvard students took over the university's administration building; 45 are injured and 184 arrested.
20 - A grassroots movement of Berkeley community members seize an empty lot owned by the University of California to begin the formation of "People's Park."
02 - British liner Queen Elizabeth II leaves on maiden voyage to New York.
15 - Governor Ronald Reagan sent in the National Guard to reclaim People's Park from 6,000 protesters in Berkeley who had occupied the space and created the park.
16 - Soviet spacecraft Venera 5 lands on the surface of Venus.
01 - John Lennon and Yoko Ono conduct their Bed-In for Peace in Montreal. Give Peace a Chance is recorded at this bed-in for peace by John Lennon. The song is still a strong anthem for peace.
08 - President Richard Nixon and South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu meet and Nixon announces that 25,000 U.S. troops will be withdrawn by September.
22 - Judy Garland dies in London, aged 47
28 - The Stonewall riots in New York City mark the beginning of the gay rights movement. The riot follows the raiding of the Stonewall Bar, a gay establishment in New York's Greenwich Village by police.
08 - The very first United States troop withdrawals are made from Vietnam.
14 - Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, is released.
18 - Edward M. Kennedy drives off a bridge on his way home from a party on Chappaquiddick Island and Mary Jo Kopechne is drowned.
20 - The Eagle lands on the lunar surface and Neil Armstrong takes his historic first steps on the moon. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
25 - President Nixon declares the Nixon Doctrine, stating that the United States now expects its Asian allies to take care of their own military defense. This starts the "Vietnamization" of the war.
31 - Elvis Presley first performs his song "Suspicious Minds" at the Las Vegas International Hotel (later renamed the Hilton.) This would be Elvis' last number one single.
09 - Followers of Charles Manson murder actress Sharon Tate, (who was 8 months pregnant) and her friends.
15 - Nearly 400,000 converge on a farm in New York for the Woodstock Festival.
17 - Category 5 Hurricane Camille hits the Mississippi coast, killing 248 people and causing $1.5 billion in damage (1969 dollars).
02 - The first automatic teller machine (ATM) in the United States is installed in New York.
13 - Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and Archie's Comedy Hour premiere on CBS Saturday Morning.
09 - In Chicago, the National Guard is called in to control demonstrations involving the radical Weathermen, in connection with the "Chicago Eight" Trial.
15 - Hundreds of thousands of people take part in National Moratorium antiwar demonstrations across the United States with candlelight vigils and prayers for peace.
16 - The "miracle" New York Mets win the World Series, beating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles 4 games to 1.
29 - The first message was sent over ARPANET, the forerunner of the internet.
03 - President Nixon addresses the nation asking the "silent majority" to join him in solidarity with the Vietnam War effort, and to support his policies. Vice President Agnew denounces the President's critics as 'an effete corps of impudent snobs' and 'nattering nabobs of negativism.'
10 - Sesame Street debuts on television.
12 - Independent investigative journalist Seymour Hersh breaks the My Lai story.
15 - In Washington, DC, 250,000-500,000 protesters stage a peaceful demonstration against the war, including a symbolic "March Against Death."
17 - Negotiators from the Soviet Union and the United States begin the SALT I negotiations aimed at limiting the number of strategic weapons on both sides.
19 - Pele scores 1000th goal.
01 - The Selective Service conducts the first draft lottery since 1942.
06 - The Altamont Free Concert is held at the Altamont Speedway in northern California. Hosted by the Rolling Stones, it is an attempt at a "Woodstock West" and is best known for the uproar of violence that occurred.
17 - Tiny Tim gets married on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show.
The first home computer, the H316 "Kitchen Computer is released by Honeywell and priced at $10,600 in the Neiman Marcus catalog.
Unix, a small computer operating system, was developed by AT&T.
The Mustang Mach I is introduced. The Mach 1 featured a deluxe interior with simulated wood trim, high backed seats, extra sound deadening, remote sports mirrors and other comforts. The Mach 1 proved popular with buyers with 72,458 cars sold through 1969.
