A Social Security Number (SSN) is a 9-digit employee identification number issued by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA).
Eligibility for an SSN is based upon a person’s eligibility to work in the United States. Those eligible for a Social Security Number include U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and qualified foreign nationals — including, in certain circumstances, students in F-1 status. An SSN is required by the U.S. government in some cases for tax and employment reporting purposes.
F and J visa holders must have active SEVIS immigration records when they apply for a SSN. If you apply for a SSN before your record is active, your SSN application will be rejected, and you will need to reapply. You can apply:
at least 10 business days after your SEVIS record is registered at the start of your program
30 days before the start date of your Curricular Practical Training authorization listed on your Form I-20
After you receive your On-Campus Employment Letter (no earlier than 30 days before the start date)

To save you a trip to the Social Security Office you can now apply for an original SSN or (replacement SSN card) on the same application form you will use to apply for permission to work legally in the U.S.
If you apply for work authorization using the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization and you completed the section on the application to request an SSN card, then USCIS will send us the data we need to issue your original SSN or SSN replacement Card. If you apply for an SSN card using Form I-765, you do not have to contact a Social Security office to apply for an SSN card. If USCIS approves your application, you will receive two documents - your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), also known as the "USCIS I-765 card" or "work permit", and in another envelope your SSN card. We will mail your SSN card to the address you listed on your I-765 application. You should receive your SSN card no later than seven business days after you receive your EAD from USCIS.
You can find more information on the requirements here: International Students and Social Security Flyer
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is requiring appointments. Once you fill out an online application, you will be able to schedule an appointment to bring your documents to the office in person.
SSA has launched a new online portal: OSSNAP – Online Social Security Number Application Portal
This allows you to enter your personal information prior to your visit to the SSA, so that when you go to the office, the SSA representative will only need to verify your information and check your documents.
*You must visit a local Social Security office in person to present the appropriate documentation within 45 calendar days.*
Once you have each of the documents ready, and have submitted the online SSN application, you must go in person to your local Social Security Administration office with hard copy immigration documents to apply for the SSN. There is no charge for SSN and card.
After you complete your in-person application with Social Security, the SSN card will be mailed to you within 2-4 weeks.

While you wait for your SSN, your employer can use a letter from us stating you applied for a number. Your immigration documents can prove your authorization to work in the United States. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires employers to use your SSN to report your wages.
Employers can find more information online at www.ssa.gov/employer/hiring.htm.
Important Reminders
Keep your SSN card and number private and secure.
Never email your SSN
If you lose your SSN card and need to apply for a replacement, you must prove your eligibility for employment again when you apply for the replacement card.
If you receive an SSN and you already have an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), it is your responsibility to notify the IRS so they can combine all of your tax records under one identification number. For more information visit www.irs.gov/individuals/additional-itin-information.
If you have questions regarding an SSN, visit www.ssa.gov or call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
