F-1 international students may wish to seek employment during their time at Simmons in order to gain work experience in their field of study or to earn additional income. As the primary and core purpose of the F-1 Student Visa is to pursue an education, the opportunities to work or engage in similar activities are restricted to a few options.
In general, on-campus employment for international students means that you are working:
On Simmons's campus;
For Simmons; and
On Simmons's payroll.
If these 3 conditions are not met—for example, if you would be working on campus but a professor or an organization other than Simmons University would be paying you—please speak with CGE first.
International students holding an F-1 visa are allowed to work on-campus in University positions or positions that provide direct services to students (i.e. the book store, the registrar's office).
On-campus employment is limited to:
20 hours a week (fall and spring semesters)
40 hours a week (Vacation periods)
For more information about available job positions on-campus, please visit the Simmons Student Employment page.
Note: Working on other campuses that are part of the Colleges of Fenway is not considered on-campus employment.
You will need a Social Security Number in order to begin employment on-campus.
In order to begin your job, you will need to complete I-9 documents. These require a SSN to complete them.
It is important to remember that any off-campus employment must be authorized! Without proper authorization, off-campus employment or similar activities is considered a violation of your F-1 visa terms. A violation of your immigration status will lead to termination of all F-1 status and deem you "out of status," requiring the your departure from the U.S.
F-1 students' off-campus work authorization options are:
Off-Campus Employment Based on Economic Hardship
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will authorize off-campus employment in cases of severe economic hardship caused by unforeseen circumstances occurring after a student's enrollment in F-1 status for at least one full academic year. These circumstances may include:
A loss of financial support without fault on the part of the student
Substantial fluctuations in the value of currency or exchange rate
Inordinate increase in tuition and/or living cost
Unexpected changes in the financial condition of the student's source of support, medical bills, or other substantial and unexpected expenses.
*Employment due to economic hardship is usually granted in 12 month increment. This does not impact eligibility for OPT.*
If this is something you believe you are eligible for, please contact the CGE at our email: cge@simmons.edu.
