Fun Fact: Ancient Egyptians used basil as part of the embalming process.
Basil is a culinary and aromatic herb in the mint family, and originated from India. It may be eaten fresh or dried, and is used to flavor meats, fish, salads, and sauces such as pesto. Basil goes well with olive oil, garlic, pasa, tomatoes, and chicken. Nutritionally it provides antioxidants, iron, manganese, magnesium, copper, and vitamins A, C, K, & B6. Storing basil can be tricky. The best method is to put in a glass of water like flowers, place a plastic bag over the basin and store in the refrigerator. The second way is to pick off leaves and place on paper towels or a kitchen towel and roll up. Place the towel in a plastic bag and refrigerate. For longer storage it may be frozen, but will need to be blanched to retain the green color.Â
