Ocean Mural
The Purpose of this lesson is for students to connect their Ocean Curriculum with Art Class
The Artist will:
- Discuss ocean animals. The students will make a list as a class.
- The teacher will read the book, “Feather Fin”, and “Fish Faces” to the class to give them a better idea of fantasy and realistic looking fish.
- Be introduced to grid drawing, and be shown examples of how this can help when you are working to get proportion correct. The students will practice by using a clear grid laying over their pictures, grid paper, and also the how to draw books using grids.
- Choose a specific ocean animal, and become an expert on it. The students can check out books about it, find information on the internet, and look through the teachers books as well.
- Find a good picture of their ocean animal, and make several sketches.
- Receive their thick piece of 9 by 12 paper, and create their final drawing.
- Draw with pencil, trace with sharpies, and paint their ocean animal using watercolors.
- Cut them out neatly and add them to our 2nd grade ocean mural.
Materials: Pencils, ocean animal books, sharpies, watercolors, scissors.

Fall Tree ProjectThe purpose of this project is for students to explore 2 different styles of painting with 2 different types of mediums!The artist will:
- Discuss fall and colors that are associated!
- Talk about how trees look when they are changing colors through Autumn.
- Discuss using a straw as a painting tool, and learning the art of "blowing" paint. Straws can also be used to move the paint around to create trees trunks, etc.
- Discuss Impressionism and what it means. Talk about using this painting method as a way to create fall leaves using only red and yellow, and letting it combine to make orange.
- Create a fall tree using the 2 methods of painting described.
Materials: 9x18 paper, liquidy brown paint, straws, red and yellow tempera paint, brushes.
Calabash Animals
The Purpose of this project is for students to relate designs, animals, and African culture to their artwork.
Objectives: The Artist will:
- Discuss what they know about African Art
- Listen to the book, Calabash Cat! By James Rumford.
- Discuss all the Calabash animals and their designs.
- Talk about Elements of design, such as line, shape, texture, and value.
- Create a calabash animal using thin and thick black sharpies, lots of textures, lines and designs.
- Display these in the Hallways!
Materials: white paper, thick and thin black sharpies.

Make Me Scream! Expressionism Unit
Purpose of this project is for students to understand the ideas behind “The Scream” by Edward Munch, and create their own drawing of something that makes them want to scream! 4-6 class periods.
Objectives:** The artist will:
- (Day 1): Discuss the great artist, Edward Munch, and his work of art, “The Scream”.
- Discuss Expressionism, what it means, and a few other artists that follow along with these ideas (Van Gogh and Pollack).
- Brainstorm why they think this person is screaming in the work of art.
- (Day 2)Color the Scream Color sheet to understand the ideas of layering and using lines not coloring using oil pastels.
- Make a class list of things that make them want to scream.
- (Day3-6) Sketch and draw a parody of the Scream with oil pastels their “scream” ideas.
- Create their final on black paper using pencil first, and using the layering technique of the oil pastels
Materials: scream color sheet, 9x12 sketch paper, 12x18 Black Paper, pencils, oil pastels. Vocabulary: Texture, Contrast, Expressionism.

Matisse Mixed Media Collages
The purpose of this lesson is to understand Matisse and his style of collage.
The Artist will:
- ( Day 1-2)Listen to the book, Drawing With Scissors, which explains Matisse and his fascinating life and works of art.
- Discuss the Fish and Ocean theme for the second grade.
- Define Collage, Mixed Media, and warm/cool colors.
- Discuss the round shape of a classic fish bowl. Also talk about other shapes of fish tanks.
- Create and paint a watercolor fish bowl on a 12x18 piece of posterboard. When they paint, make sure they use cool colors (blue, purple, and green), and only paint the fishbowl!
- (Day 2-3): Use construction paper from the scrap box to make a collage of fish and other things they find in a fish bowl (example).
- (Day 3-4) Use markers to create the background designs similar to Mattisse's paintings. They can refer to the lines and designs sheet for ideas (show example)
- Materials: 12x18 Poster board, watercolor paint, construction paper scraps, scissors, glue, markers, shiny paper for scale accents.

Dragons
The students will:
- Learn about Dragons, their legends, and the background behind the Dragon symbol in China.
- Look at several examples of dragons physically and on the internet.
- Learn their Chinese Zodiac sign, and what it means.
- Sketch and color a dragon using the examples and their imagination!
- Draw, trace, paint, cut out, add glitter and sequins.
- Glue sticks onto the back of the dragon to create a puppet like dragon for the Chinese New Year Celebration.
- Have their Dragons displayed in the hallways!

Printmaking Series
The Artist Will:
- Watch a video with several different easy printmaking techniques.
- Discuss the printmaking video, and how easy it is to make prints.
- Discuss the steps, procedures, and materials used for printmaking.
- Create 3-4 different styles of printmaking, including styrofoam, sponge, and finger drawing on the back of a tray.
- Connect the styrofoam printmaking to their Ocean Unit in 2nd grade.
Recycled Fish
The Purpose of this lesson is for students to create a connection to their Ocean Unit through art and recycling!
The Artist will:
- Discuss fish and sea life, and the parts of fish that allow them to be "aquatic" animals
- Discuss the importance of recycling for the environment.
- Bring in a 2 liter bottle, or a water bottle.
- Prime their bottles with white paint.
- Glue on their fish fins and tails.
- Paint their fish using bright colors, scales, lines, and designs.
- Add googly eyes, sequins and shiny paper.
- Attach a string to the top fin.
Materials: 2 liter or water bottle, paint, glue gun, poster board, googly eyes, sequins, shiny paper, string, paper hole puncher.
