Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is a collaboration between SoMaS and the Peer Learning team at the 301 Academic Skills Centre.

We utilise the skills and experience of higher year students to provide study support for students in level 1 of study. There is a significant and growing evidence base to support the benefits to participants (you!) and student leaders who engage with peer learning schemes such as PAL.

You'll be assigned to a PAL group from your core module (MAS110) and your timetable will include 3 sessions over the semester for you to meet in your PAL group. This group consists of other level 1 students taking MAS110, and 2 PAL Leaders who study maths and are currently in level 2. The student leaders will run tutorial/revision style sessions where you'll get the choice to cover the topics that your group are most interested in receiving assistance with. There'll be no lecturers in the room, as we want you to feel like this is a friendly, informal environment for you to study with, and learn from, your peers.

“It has relaxed me and made me more confident that I am capable of achieving good grades.” 1st year student

“I’ve met new people on my course and have become much more organised as a result of being a Leader” Student leader

“The Leaders gain invaluable experience and develop before our eyes; the Level 1 participants have extra help from students who have recently and successfully passed the year; why wouldn’t you get involved?” Module lecturer
