Mentoring

We recommend all level 1 students sign up for a mentor!

The transition from home or work to university life can be a challenging, exciting and demanding time, and the University mentoring scheme aims to make this period of change as easy and enjoyable as possible.

If you sign up for the mentoring scheme, you will be matched to a volunteer mentor who is a current student in SoMaS from a higher level. Your mentor will be able to help you settle into your new surroundings and act as a friendly face. This is a fantastic opportunity to get an insight into what the year ahead will be like from someone who has already made it through their first year, to help you make the most of yours and possibly give you some invaluable tips!

Your mentor can:

  • tell you about events and activities

  • communicate via phone, email or face to face

  • show you round the department and University

  • offer one-to-one, confidential advice and support

  • introduce you to their other mentees within your department

Our mentors have been trained to ensure your relationship with them is confidential. Only in extreme circumstances will they seek extra support from the mentoring team. You can meet with your mentor as frequently as you need for the duration of a year.

You can apply for a mentor before you start at the University, so you will be able to ask any last minute questions that you may have before you arrive.

Applying for a mentor is easy: details of the scheme and the online application form are available here [https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/mentoring].
