Informal support in the Department
If you just want to talk over your problems you might do this with your personal tutor. This will, of course, depend on how well you think you know your tutor. If you feel more comfortable talking to another member of staff, please feel free to do so. All members of staff will talk to you on an informal and confidential basis. In some cases, it may be appropriate for Level 1 students to approach a student mentor.
Student Access to Mental Health Support (SAMHS)
If you need mental health support during your studies, you can register online with SAMHS and book an initial triage appointment. They will consider your suitability for one-to-one counselling with the University Counselling Service, as well as a wide range of other available interventions. www.sheffield.ac.uk/mental-wellbeing
Events and workshops
The University Counselling Service offers free drop-in workshops each week, including sessions for mindfulness and hypnosis for inner calm and positivity. www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/counselling/services/workshops
External support
As a student you have free international access to Big White Wall, an online mental health community providing 24/7 support from peers and trained counsellors. www.bigwhitewall.com
Confidential peer support
Nightline is the University of Sheffield’s confidential listening and information helpline. It is run by trained student volunteers, and operates from 8 pm until 8 am every night during term time. It offers students everything from the phone number of a twenty-four hour taxi company, to exam dates, times and locations, and information about every issue that can be encountered within student life. It provides a vital support network for all students, and can be called free from Halls of Residence. For listening, telephone 2228787; for information telephone 2228788 (these numbers are on your UCard).
