Absences under seven days
If you have a short illness of less than seven days, you can report this via a Self-Certification form, handed in to the MBB office. It is particularly important to complete a form if you miss a compulsory tutorial, practical class, analysis session, or component of a project module.
Longer absences or those that affect assessment
Students should inform the department about prolonged illnesses, particularly if this implies absence from lectures, practicals or tutorials. In these instances, you must complete an Extenuating Circumstances form and hand it in, together with appropriate evidence. An Extenuating Circumstances form will also be required for a short absence if it resulted in you missing an assessment. Please talk to your personal tutor or one of the year tutors if you are unsure about this process.
Reporting extenuating circumstances that have affected your ability to study
If you believe that you have health or personal issues that have impacted on your ability to study or reduced your performance in assessment, then please let the department know by completing an Extenuating Circumstances form and submitting relevant evidence. This will enable us to take your circumstances into consideration. For example, if you miss a round robin tutorial due to illness but don't complete the paperwork, you are likely to receive a mark of zero for the assignment; if you complete the appropriate form and provide suitable evidence then we will mark you as 'Not Assessed' for that piece of work and you will receive the average of your other round robin marks.

Leave of Absence
Some students facing significant medical problems or personal difficulties choose to spend some time away from their studies. This is called a Leave of Absence. This has some major implications and must be discussed with the Director of Studies.
