While at University you will be occupied fully with academic and other activities. However, even in the first year of your course it is worth starting to think about the future, and to consider how you can acquire some relevant work experience and personal skills that will make you more employable. The University of Sheffield has one of the best Careers Service departments in the country. The Careers Service is based at Edgar Allen House, 241 Glossop Road, opposite the Student Health Centre. It has a team of advisers, who will be able to discuss any aspect of your career, from helping you make a start on considering career options and getting work experience through to practical tips on job hunting, applications and interviews. Appointments with advisers can be made via CareerConnect in MUSE (for more information - https://careerconnect.sheffield.ac.uk/home.html). For students unable to access the Careers Service in person, there’s a facility to send an electronic enquiry via Career Connect.
The Careers Service has a comprehensive website, https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers, which is a good starting point if you want to find out more about how the Careers Service can help you.
The Careers Service runs an extensive programme of events to bring employers onto campus, including: presentations by employers; seminars and workshops to help students find out about occupations and jobs on offer; recruitment and information fairs. A full list of forthcoming events open to MBB students appears in CareerConnect. Through CareerConnect, you can also see a list of vacancies for both work experience and graduate jobs that are open to MBB students and graduates.
The Careers Service collates information about graduates’ employment which helps us to direct our students to the right career. Therefore, if you are asked to provide data to the Careers Service about what you have gone on to do, please do so; as well as keeping our records up-to-date we are interested to know what our graduates are doing after they leave University!
All work experience is valuable in preparing you for your future after graduation, even work that is completely unrelated to your degree subject. There are opportunities for MBB students to work in industry for a year as part of a BSc or MBiolSci programme. The Careers Service’s Placements Team can give you advice about a broad range of work experience: www.shef.ac.uk/placements. In addition, you can obtain support from Dr Alvey in MBB.
Make the most of any work experience, volunteering or other extra-curricular activities you undertake at the University. The Skills for Work Certificate and Sheffield Graduate Award are designed to help you use experiences you have gained outside your degree to demonstrate to future employers that you have the necessary skills to perform in the workplace. They also help you to learn about yourself and your career options. Find out more on the Careers Service website: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers/skills
If you are considering taking part time work during term time, talk to the staff in the Student Jobshop, Students’ Union building. Remember that you are expected to spend at least 36 hours per week on your degree studies during the 30 weeks of the academic year, and to be available to do course work during evenings and weekends as required by the course. The University’s general approval for students to undertake up to 16 hours paid employment per week in term time does not apply to MBB students. A part time job may have an adverse effect on your degree in MBB, and in most cases we would advise MBB students not to take on such a commitment unless they depend upon the income.
