This decade had 7 individual state champions and 2 team state champions.

The football team stand outs were Bryan Kier, Tray Faine, and George Robbins.
The 16-4-1 boys soccer team (Coach Buren), won the Cape Coast Conference, and the team was led by Ruben Garcia (29 goals), Keith Holroyd (18 assists), Kamran Sarkarati, Dan Sweeney, Steve Wietgrefe and Dan Neal.
The (Record not known) volleyball team finished 2nd in district, and the team was led by Renae Brown, Geane Brown, Lori Huneycutt, Tonia Morgan, and Leslie McClean.
The girls swim team did well during the regular season winning the Cape Coast Conference.
The boys swim team (Coach Hughes) finished 2nd in district, and the team sent Dan Valdes, David Valdes, Matt Adams, and Chris Davidson to the state meet.
Dan Valdes finished 2nd in 100 fly and 3rd in the 100 backstroke, while David Valdes finished 6th in the 100 fly and 4th in 200 IM.
Danny Valdes was named a National All-American for swimming.
The golf team's standout was Mark Coffey, and he won All-Space Coast golfer of the year.
The 23-5 baseball team (Coach Hodgins) won the Cape Coast Championship, and the team was led by Brian Magrinao (9-2 with 0.93 ERA), Ruben Garcia, George Robins, Denny Loggins, Danny Victor, and Marty Bourson.
The boys track team had Aaron Jones qualify in the 110 hurdles (14.0) for the state meet.

The 6-6 football team (Coach Odom) won the district, and the team advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs.
The football team was led by Aaron Jones, Jimmy Love, Cedric Cliatt, Rob Chmielewski, Bubba Shipley, Tray Faine, and Matt McNeely.
The 27-11 volleyball team (Coach Walden) won the District Championship, and advanced to the state championship game to finish 2nd in the state.
The volleyball team was led by Leslie MacLean, Lori Huneycutt, Jean Zabin, Callie Buchanan and Amy Chocolaad.
Coach Betty Walden won All-Space Coast coach of the year, and Lori Huneycutt won All-Space Coast player of the year for volleyball.
The boys swim team sent David Valdes (100 free/200 IM), Carl Ellefson (500 free), and the 400 freestyle relay to the state meet.
The swim team finished 16th at state, and David Valdes was the state champion in the 100 free and played 4th in the 200 IM.
David Valdes was named All-Space Coast swimmer of the year.
The wrestling team (Coach Holloway) sent Terry Mingo (119) and Ceasar Figueroa (220) to the state meet.
The 17-6-1 girls soccer team (Coach Freeman) won the Cape Coast Conference and finished 2nd in the district, and the team was led by Amy Chocolaad, Leslie MacLean (110 saves), Shannon Sullivan (24 goals), Jennifer Hodgins, and Jean Zabin (31 goals).
The 20-3-3 boys soccer team (Coach Buren), won the Cape Coast and District Championship and advanced to the first round of the playoff.
The boys soccer team was led by Rubin Garcia (38 goals), Erick Garcia, Kamran Sarkarati, Keith Holroyd, Dan Neal, and Dan Sweeney, and Ricky Bleichner.
Rubin Garcia was named All-Space Coast soccer player of the year.
The 12-9 softball team were led by Jenny Coppage, Kim Berube, Andrea Thompson, Leslie MacLean, and M. Chamberlain.
The 23-7 baseball team (Coach Soderstrom) won the Cape Coast and District championships, and the team advanced the second round of the playoffs.
The baseball team was led by Joe Flanagan, Denny Loggins (.358), Ron Chmielewski, Kurt Durette, and Mickey Coppage.
The 7-2 girls golf (Coach Sparks) qualified out of the sub-district to the district, and the team was led by Erin Kurczeski (37.7 average), Lauren Gonsalves, Marni Kosalkos, and Kristy Butfiloski.
Erin Kurczeski was All-Space Coast player of the year.
The boys track and field (Coach Kent) team state qualifiers were Aaron Jones (120 H/330H) Will Umerski (220), and Zack Culbertson (400).
The girls track and field team state qualifier was Tanisha Moore in the 100.
At the state meet, Aaron Jones won the 120 hurdles and finished 3rd in the 300 hurdles, and this helped the boys team to a 10th place finish in state.
Special note: Aaron Jones had the fastest high school time in the 120 hurdles in the country with 13.75.
Aaron Jones was name All-Space Coast athlete of the year for track and field.

The football team was led by John Allison, Rocky Galmore (passed 468yrds and ran for 541), Craig Drabyk (5.9 ypc), Jason Guilford (6 int, Derrick Ham, Jeff Hughes, Kelly Keegan, Bryan Kewley, and Nate Trout (6/7 fg and 15/21 xp).
The volleyball's standout athlete was Callie Buchanan.
Girls cross country (Coach Kent) had Gretchen Dittmer qualify for the regional meet.
The girls swim team (Coach Capper) state qualifiers were Jennifer Harney (100 Back) and the 200 Medley Relay( Harney, Michelle Hall, Kim Reader, and Patti Hill)
The boys swim team (Coach Salmon) Carl Ellefson (200 free/ 500 free), Travis Kunce (200 free/100 back), Adam Goodwin (50 free), David Valdes (200 IM/ 100 fly), 200 Medley Relay, and 400 Medley Relay.
At the state swim meet, David Valdes won the 100 butterfly and finished 6th in the 200 IM, and the boys team finished 12th in the state.
The 9-10-2 girls soccer team (Coach Freeman) won the District Championship, and the team was led by Stephanie Johnson and Christie Lawlor.
The 15-7-2 boys soccer team (Coach Buren), won the District Championship and advanced to the first round of the playoff.
The boys soccer team was led by Kevin Ferrie, Ruben Garcia (38 goals), K.C. Easterly, Jason Cope, and Ricky Bleichner.
The wrestling team (Coach Holloway) had Harry Dockery (Hwt.) qualify for the state meet.
The 11-2 girls golf team (Coach Sparks) had Erin Kurczewski qualified for the state tournament by winning the individual district title.

In boys track, the state qualifiers were Zach Culbertson in the 800 (2nd/1:54.9), Will Umerski in the 120 hurdles (3rd) and 300 hurdles (3rd), and the 4 x 400 relay.
The baseball team had 2 solid hitters that were Rubin Garcia (.345) and Alex Minneboo (.369).
The softball team was led by Jenny Coppage (.485)
Erin Kurczewski finished her golfing career with an 8th place individual finish at the golf state championship, 2 district championships, and 3-time All-Space Coast player of the year.
The volleyball team celebrates winning the Cape Coast and District Championship.
Derrick Ham won All-Space Coast player of the year with 41 solo tackles, 69 total tackles, and 4 sacks.
MAJOR CHANGE: FHSAA will allow the District Champion and District Runner up will be advancing to the playoffs.
The 8-3 football team (Coach Odom) advances to the playoffs placing 2nd in the district, but the team lost a close game in the first round of the playoffs.
The football team was led by Joey Bachstein, Mike Burroughs (key guard for a team that ran 2,838 yards), Craig Drabyk, Rocky Gilmore, Derrick Ham, Sean Peach, Nate Trout (9-15 fg with 50yd made field goal), and Kevin Wood.
Derrick Ham won All-Space Coast player of the year.
The 27-6 volleyball team (1st year Coach Trina Skinner) won the cape coast and district championship, and the team advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs.
The volleyball team was led by Tracey Strickland, Heather Hadlock, Mandy Motty, Melanie Chamberlain, Jenny Murphy , and Sarah Lechner.
Coach Skinner won the All-Space Coast coach of the year, making her the first to win player and coach of the year.
The boys cross country team qualified for regionals, and the team was led by Zac Culberson.
The girls swim team had Kari Van Meter (100F/200F) and Jennifer Harney (200IM) qualify for the state meet.
The boys swim team had Mark Mooney (200F), Tony McFarr (200IM), Adam Goodwin (50F/100F), 200 IM Relay and 200 Free Relay (Goodwin, McFarr, Bern Kause, and Josh Capper) qualify for the state meet.
At the state swim meet, Adam Goodwin placed 7th in the 100 freestyle, and earned All-Space Coast swimmer of the year.
The boys soccer standout players was midfielder Jason Cope and defender Ben Teixeira.
The girls soccer standout players were Shannon Sullivan and Liz Stites.
The girls golf team (Coach Sparks) won the Cape Coast and District championship earning a state qualification, and the team was led by Erin Kurczewski, Shannon Duff, Courtney Mace, Trisha Hirt, and Brandie Wartell.
At the girls golf state championship, the team finished 8th, and Erin Kurczewski finished 8th as an individual.
Coach Sparks earned All-Space Coast coach of the year, and the Erin Kurczewski earned All-Space Coast player of the year.
The girls track team finished 2nd in Districts, and the state qualifiers were Andrea Dempsey (1600), Heather Hadlock (Shot Put), Stefenice Williams (100/200), and 4x100 (Williams, Tamekia Woulard, Tiffany Spencer, and Aileen Williams).
The boys track team finished 2nd in District, and the state qualifiers were Zac Culbertson (800), Curtis Latham (400), and the 4x400 (Latham, Culbertson, Rocky Galmore, and Josh Anderson).
The state places at the state meet, Zac Culbertson finished 3rd, Heather Hadlock finished 5th, and the girls 4x100 finished 5th.
During the pep rally, the sign "You are entering the O-Dome" was presented to Coach Odom. This sign still hangs over the entrance of the stadium, and the mustang football team pays respect by touching the sign before entering every home football game.
The football team advanced to the final 4.
Nate Trout finished as an All-State for Florida, and he has state records for 71 conversions in a row 37 career field goals. His longest field goal was 54 yards.
MAJOR CHANGE: Jeff McClain was appointed to the new athletic director of Merritt Island High School.

The 11-3 football team (Coach Odom) won the District Championship, and advanced to the semi-final game where the mustangs came up short.
The football team was led by Mike Carney, Joey Bachstein, Josh Anderson, Torre Smith, Brian Jacobs, Nate Trout (All-State), Dan Daniels, David Wilson (57 tackles), Mike Spencer (89 tackles/50 solo), Russ Sinclair, Josh Anderson, and Jason Muchow.
The 12-12 volleyball team was led by Heather Hadlock and Courtney Mace.
Girls cross country (Coach Delight Chambers-Abreu) qualified for regionals, and the team was led by Andrea Dempsey and Mary Osikowicz.
The boys cross country team qualified for regional, and the team was led by Milt Borens and Chad Munkilt.
The boy swim team state qualifiers were the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, Adam Goodwin 50 Free, Anton Lundholm 200 Breast and 200 IM, and Mark Mooney 100 Back.
At the state swim meet, Anton Lundholm (exchange student) finished 2nd in the 100 Breaststroke (1:02.13) and the 200 Freestyle Relay finished 5th.
The girls basketball area standout was Heather Hadlock.
The wrestling team finished 3rd in the Cape Coast, and the team sent Mike Pomeroy (220/27-3) and Jason Muchow (Hwt.) to the state meet.
The boys tennis area standout was David Majors.
The 7-3 boys golf team had a successful season.
The 8-2 girls golf team had a successful season, and the team was led by Courtney Mace and Bridget Kurczewski.
The 11-10 softball team had a successful season, and the team was led by Jeana Delrossa, Jenny Gilbert, Sarah Musgraves, Sasha Buthker, and Sabrina Lyle.
The 16-11 baseball team had a successful team, and the team was led by Jimmy Perna, Nate Trout, Mike Carney, and Mike Fiero.
The 11-10 softball team was led by Sarah Musgrave and Sasha Buthker.
Girls track has a strong season, and the state qualifiers were Heather Hadlock (Shot/Discus), Andrea Dempsey (1600), and Tara Boyko (100 Hurdles)
The boys track team state qualifiers were Phillip Welsh (HJ) and 4x800 (Milton Dorens, Kareem Chtai, Brian Pastermack, and Chad Munkett).
The state placers at the track and field meet were Heather Hadlock 4th in the shot and 5th in discuss, Andrea Dempsey finishing 8th, and the boys 4x800 team finishing 8th.
Coach Odom, thank you for everything you did for Merritt Island High School. He was a head coach for 22 years with a 191-57-2 career record.
Andrea Dempsey concluded her senior year with a 4th place finish in 800 and 3rd place finish in the 1600 at the state track and field meet.
Jason Muchow was one of the dominate players for the mustangs, and had a 28-5 wrestling record.
MAJOR CHANGE: Coach Odom steps down as head coach. Starting in 1967 as a defensive coordinator, and took over as head coach in 1973. He finished with the highest winning percentage in school's history, and he won 3 state title (2 head coach/1 defensive coordinator). Thank you Coach Odom for all the student athletes you helped over the years.

The football team was led by Jason Muchow, Joe Rossi, Ahmed El-Hawary, and Brian Pastermack.
Jason Muchow was named All-Space Coast defensive player of the year with 99 tackles.
The girls cross country team highlight was when Andrea Dempsey won the Cape Coast Individual Championship, and voted All-Space Coast runner of the year.
The volleyball team was led by standout Courtney Mace.
The boys cross country team had Milton Borens qualify for the regional meet (16:53).
The boys swim team had the 200 IM Relay qualify for the state meet.
The boys basketball team was led by Matt Osikowicz.
The wrestling team had Jason Muchow (Hwy) qualify for the state tournament.
The 15-8 girls soccer (Coach O'Donnell) team finished 2nd in district led by Jill Piotrowski, Carolina Pereyra, Ce Ce Stites, and Liz Stites (34 goals), and the team advances to the playoffs.
The 19-7-2 boys soccer (Coach Barnas) team finished 2nd in district led by Lloyd Chamberlain (34 goals), Tim Palmer, and Scott Shadforth, and the team advances to the playoffs.
The 10-1 boys golf team (Coach Sparks) won the Cape Coast Championship, and the team was led by Lloyd Chamberlain, Justin Yost, and Jason Johnson.
The 9-1 girls golf team (Coach Sparks) won the Cape Coast Championship, and the team was led by Bridget Kurczewski and Courtney Mace.
The 16-7 softball team (Coach Holloway) had a solid season, and the team was led by Jessica Beal (.341 avg), Jenny Gillett, Heather O'Dell, and Jeanne DeRosa.
The 21-10 baseball team (Coach Goldfarb) had a solid season, and the team was led by Chris Colella, Adam Martin, Mike Fiero, Jimmy Perna, Don Chamberlain, and Nick Brando.
The girls track team won the District Championship and 2nd in Regional, and the state qualifiers were Peaches Williams (TJ, LJ, HJ, 110 H, and 4x100), 4x100, Stephanie Williams (4x100, 200), and Andrea Dempsey (800, 1600)

The 24-5 volleyball team (Coach Denaburg) finished 2nd in Cape Coast, and the team was led by Jill Piotrowski, Jessica Beal, Jessica Daniels, and Dawn Ippolito.
The swim team qualified Sally Zelinsky (100 Fly), Eric Bittner (100 Breast), Anders Nelson (50F/100F), and Boys 200 IM Relay (Matt Carmen, Bittner, Scott Malta, and Nelson) for the state meet.
The wrestling team sent Mike Vanorman (189) and John King (215) to the state meet.
The boys basketball standout was Matt Van Someren.
The girls basketball standout was Peaches Williams.

The 6-3 boys golf team finished 2nd in the district, and the team was led by Jason Johnson, Kevin Johnson, and David Sears.
The 12-2 boys tennis team had a solid year, and the team was led by Amit Rawal, Sundeep Rawal, Ronnie Gould, and Ben Hoofnagle.
The 12-12 softball team (Coach Holloway) finished 2nd in district to qualify for the playoffs, and the team had two upsets to advance to the 3rd round.
The softball team was led by April King, Stephanie Kretschman, Jessica Beal (.345 avg), Jennifer Daniels, Jessica Daniels, and Ursula Kelly.
The 28-5 baseball team (Coach Goldfarb) finished 2nd in the district, and the team advanced to the Regional Final (3rd round).
The baseball team was led by Chris Colella (14-3 with 1.38 ERA and 135 K), Jimmy Perna (.434 avg with 33 SB), Jamie Goldfarb (.479 avg with 44 RBI), Dan Chamberlain (.419 with 42 RBI), Tommy Parrott, and Frank Venzara.
Chris Colella was name All-Space Coast player of the year, and he was named All-State, while teammate Jimmy Perna got 2nd team All-State.
Coach Goldfarb won All-Space Coast coach of the year.
The girls track team won the Cape Coast Championship, and the state qualifiers were Peaches Williams (LJ, HJ, TJ, 4X100, and 110 H)
The boys track team had a solid year, and the state qualifier was Phillip Welsh (HJ) finishing 7th in the state meet.
Peaches Williams dominate state performances earned the track team a 10th place finish, and she places 2nd in TJ and HJ, 3rd in the hurdles, and 6th in LJ.
Coach Barbour won All-Space Coast coach of the year, and Peaches Williams won All-Space Coast player of the year.
May 16, 1998 from Florida Today, Shawntel "Peaches" Williams wins the state championship in the triple jump and 100 hurdles.
Hugh Smith was name All-Space Coast player of the year with 1675 rushing yards, and he also place 2nd in state for the long jump.
Senior, Jamie Goldfarb, helped the baseball team advance to the regional final.
The 11-2 football team (Coach Hodgin) won the district, and the team advanced to the 3rd round of the playoffs.
The football team was led by Javier Beorlegui (39 XP and 7/10 FG), Hugh Smith (1675 rushing yards), Adam Quinones (Key lineman for a team that got 353 yards a game), Jeff Miller (111 tackles with 6 1/2 sacks), Kevin Verpaele, Dan Chamberlain, and Wesley McNeely.
Hugh Smith was named All-Space Coast player of the year for football.
The 18-14 girls volleyball team (Denaburg) finished 2nd in the district, and advanced to the 3rd round (regional final) losing to Gainesville.
The volleyball team was led by Dawn Ippolito, Denae Diller, Jessica Beal, and Jessica Daniels.
The boys cross country team was led by Mike Franks.
In girls swimming, the 200 freestyle relay qualified for that state meet
The boys swim team had the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, Matt Carmen (50 free 22.78/100 free ), Wes Harold (200 IM), and Eric Bittner (100 breast) qualify for the state meet.
The 12-18 boys basketball team (Coach Light) earned a playoff spot by placing 2nd in district led by Tony Hill and Kevin Rose, and they lost in the first round to the eventual state champion Mainland.
The girls basketball team was led by Peaches Williams (20.4 ppg and 5.0 rpg)
The 17-4-3 boys soccer team had a share of the Cape Coast Conference and a 2nd place finish in the district, and the team advanced to the first round of the playoffs.

The girls soccer team finished 2nd in the district, and the team advanced to the first round of the playoffs.

The boys tennis team was led by class valedictorian Amit Rawal.
The 24-9 baseball team (Coach Goldfarb), won the District title, and the team advanced to the Regional Final (3rd Round) to lose to the eventual state champions.
The baseball team was led by Kevin Verpaele, Dan Chamberlain (.410 avg with 25 RBIs), Jamie Goldfarb (366 avg with 34 RBIs), Joe Quattrocchi, Brian Zegles, Frank Venzara, Kevin Deaton, and Jeremy Hendrex.
Boys and girls track and field (Coach Bailey) had Hugh Smith (200/LJ), Kevin Rose (TJ/HJ), and Peaches Williams (110 Hurdles, LJ, HJ, and TJ) qualified for the state meet.
At the state meet, Peaches Williams won the 100 hurdles (finishing the year undefeated/14.27) and the triple jump (39'7") at the state meet, and she also finished 7th in the LJ and 4th in the HJ.
The girls track team finished 6th in the state.
The boys track star Hugh Smith finished 2nd in the Long Jump (22'10") at the at the state meet missing first place by 1 inch.

Girls soccer (Coach Margagliotti) were led by Nicole Johnston and Alicia Davis.
