SGS expects all students to behave in a manner which is respectful of all members of our community and the school environment.
Students are expected to behave in a responsible manner in line with our code of conduct and home-school agreement. Discriminatory behaviour, rudeness to peers or staff, bullying, harassment or inappropriate language are not tolerated. Our code of conduct sets out specific policies on behaviour. SGS Sixth Form is a place where we treat each other with respect and fairness.
Rewards
Praise is a vital component of our Sixth Form. Teachers and staff may use ERA points, phone calls, postcards and letters to recognise the good work of our students. In addition, there are a number of awards and prizes offered on an annual basis for which students may be nominated.
Disciplinary procedure
Stage 1 Verbal Warning
Verbal warning can be issued by a member of the Sixth Form team when a student does not meet our code of conduct/behaves in an inappropriate manner. This is recorded and can lead to Stage 2 if further issues occur.
Stage 2 Second Verbal Warning
Issued by a member of the Sixth Form team following the first verbal warning, this is recorded and the parent/carer is informed.
Stage 3 Written warning
A formal written warning is issued to the student and copied to the parent/carer. A meeting with both the student and their parent carer is held as a result of a written warning and a plan for improvement is agreed.
Stage 4 Final warning & suspensions
Persistent poor behaviour despite the steps listed above results in a final written warning and meeting. Should the student continue to breach the code of conduct, they are at risk of being asked to leave the Sixth Form.
Whilst we do not have a formal uniform, it is important that student appearance is suitable for a working environment.
Students must wear their ID lanyards at all times whilst they are on the school premises.
Clothes, hair, piercings and tattoos should be appropriate for an educational setting.
No offensive slogans on clothing.
Hats must be removed if requested by a member of staff.
For health and safety reasons flip flops or strappy sandals must not be worn in practical subjects including Science Labs and DT/Art/Photography rooms.
If a student is wearing a cropped top, please ensure a jacket/coat/cardigan is also worn whilst walking around the school
Attendance at all lessons is crucial to success and absences should be rare. Each morning students should 'tap in' to register using the fingerprint readers in the Sixth Form and when they leave site they must 'tap out'.
Attendance should not fall below 95% unless there are extenuating circumstances supported by a medical certificate. If attendance falls below 85%, without exceptional circumstances, we reserve the right to not enter a student for their external examinations.
Students in Year 12 and Year 13 are expected to register with their Tutor on a weekly basis when they have a Tutor timetabled lesson. During this registration the Tutor will discuss progress/intervention issues that may be highlighted in recent progress reports completed by subject teachers. Attendance at additional learning hour sessions (ALH) and Next Steps is compulsory.
Parents/carers should notify the school of any absences as soon as possible:
You can report absences via:
Tel: 01903 810526
Email: sixoffice@sgs.uk.net.
Classcharts: On the absences tab select the 'Report new absence' button and complete the form.
We require parents to contact the school on the 3rd day of any sickness or other absence. Medical notes are required for more than five days absence.
If a student arrives late to lessons for any reason (medical, travel etc) they MUST sign in outside the Sixth Form Admin Office where they will provide a reason for their lateness. This reason will then be recorded for any timetabled lessons they might have missed, so that their attendance is as accurate as possible. Students must also 'tap in' using the fingerprint readers so that they are recorded as being on site.
Parents should email sixoffice@sgs.uk.net to advise of any planned absences (eg. for appointments or holidays) with as much notice as possible. Students are then responsible to collect the work missed from their teachers. Holidays in term time are strongly discouraged and will not be authorised.
