*Graduating seniors with a 3.0 GPA* The Emma Bowen Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is building a more diverse media and tech industry by recruiting promising students of color and placing them in multi-year paid internships at some of the nation’s leading companies. Paid internships in media realms such as business, marketing, sales, finance, public relations, human resources, technology, news, web design, promotion. This program is for rising seniors only (summer after junior year).

Our mission is to provide pathways to career success for high school students in underserved communities through skills training, meaningful work experiences, and impactful relationships.

Summer training is 8 weeks long and split between professional & technical training. The technical training is facilitated by Golden Gate University & is 3 college credits.

The summer training is a preparation for placement in paid internships throughout the senior year, earning minimum wage.

We are looking for first generation students of color that meet 2 of 3 criteria: 1) Receive Free & Reduced lunch, 2) First Generation 3) living in what is considered non traditional households.

All students must be able to have an adjusted school schedule in their senior year to be able to work about 20 hours a week during business hours.

Interested in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM)? Not sure? Want to learn more, and see if a career in these fields is what you want? Be a MAGIC mentee, and see for yourself!

Women with careers in technology run MAGIC and mentoring is carried out on both technical and personal subjects, including work/life balance, the role of girls in our society and how that is changing, how to avoid the technology stereotype, etc. During the session, the mentee explores her interests in STEM under the guidance of her mentor and works on one or more STEM projects. She presents her work at the end of the session to an audience consisting of other mentees, mentors, parents and family members, and MAGIC staff.

How SMASH Academy works

Beginning the summer after their 10th grade year of high school, scholars gain access to the following:

SMASH Academy, our flagship program, is a FREE, 1-year, intensive CS-focused program that empowers students to deepen their talents and pursue CS careers. Scholars are immersed in tuition-free studies in partnership with leading universities throughout the country for one summer.  

During the program, scholars build relationships with facilitators and CS professionals that reflect their same demographics. Because of their common background, students connect more deeply with gain true mentorship from these CS professionals. As they go through the program, scholars not only develop their skills and network – they also further develop their voice and build the confidence to become who they want to be.
