AP Language and Composition is a college level course intended to give students accelerated and diverse writing experiences in preparation for the AP Language and Composition exam as well as the demands of college and the professional world. In order to receive college credits, students must pass the exam at the end of the course. According to the College Board, this course “engages students in becoming skilled readers of texts written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.” This class will help you read and write for all disciplines in college.

Reading is emphasized with writing, speaking, and presenting integrated throughout the course. Students will read and study a significant body of fiction and non-fiction classic literature. Students will also view and analyze specific scenes from film and the literature to analyze and/or compare/contrast character development, theme development, and plot development. Students will compare/contrast author choices (the novel) versus director choices (the film) in regards to character development. Supplemental readings will include essays, short stories, novels, poetry, journal articles, and newspaper articles. Writing will include reader response journals, analysis of literature and film, research, timed in-class essays, and several formal essays. Students will learn the rules of citing sources in both APA and MLA style formats for all formal essays and the speech presentation. There will be at least one oral- presentation required.
