In Tune with Tradition - Perspectives on Session Etiquette in Irish Traditional Music podcast

Episode 13: 'How to Read the Room'

Guest: Mickela Mallozzi

Host: Tara Connaghan

Released: 9th March 2026

In this episode of In Tune with Tradition, Tara Connaghan speaks with Mickela Mallozzi, host and executive producer of Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi on PBS.

Mickela is not an Irish session musician, which makes her perspective especially useful. She comes to sessions as a dancer, traveller, listener and cultural observer. Through her work, she has spent years entering unfamiliar cultural spaces, learning from local people, and noticing the small cues that shape how a room works.

This conversation explores what Irish traditional music sessions look like through the eyes of someone who understands culture deeply, but who is not trying to “take over” the music. Mickela talks about listening, vulnerability, intention, respect, songs in pubs, buying musicians a drink, cultural difference, and what it really means to read the room.

Her message is clear: session etiquette is not only for musicians. Anyone who wants to experience Irish music in Ireland should understand how to listen, observe and enter the space with respect.
