Welcome to the home of the podcast 'In Tune with Tradition - Perspectives on Session Etiquette in Irish Tradional Music' exploring the unwritten rules, shared experiences and stories that shape Irish traditional music sessions. Session etiquette refers to the customs and courtesies that help sessions run smoothly and ensure everyone feels welcome, whether playing, listening or joining in for the first time.
Whether you're new to the tradition or a seasoned musician, your insight matters. The podcast series entitled 'In Tune With Tradition - Perspectives on Session Etiquette in Irish Traditional Music' was officially launched by the first guest, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan, on July 6th 2025 at Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland. The podcast aims to spark conversation that supports our vibrant community. You can listen to the podcast here or on your favourite podcast platform (such as Spotify / Apple Podcasts / Amazon etc.)
Having witnessed both the welcoming and challenging aspects of session culture throughout her career and having supported learners throughout their journey of session curiosity, Tara recognised the need for a resource that supports musicians of all backgrounds in navigating these shared spaces. This project aims to foster understanding, inclusivity, and connection within the traditional music community by sharing diverse perspectives and practical guidance on session etiquette.

NEWS!
In Tune with Tradition: The Private Session Experience is a small-group, high-level cultural experience based in Donegal for musicians who want more than tunes. This is not a generic music holiday. It is a structured deep-dive into how sessions actually function in Ireland, the unspoken codes, the hierarchy, the flow, and the subtleties that determine whether you are truly part of the session or on its edge. Places are strictly limited to protect quality and depth.
If you want to develop real cultural fluency, not just repertoire, you can join the waiting list on the retreat page.
