SESC offers Psychological First Aid for Schools (PFA-S) training designed to empower school personnel, mental health professionals, and crisis responders with practical skills to support students and staff following school or community emergencies. This training focuses on evidence-based early intervention strategies that help stabilize individuals in the immediate aftermath of a crisis, reduce initial distress, and promote adaptive coping and recovery within the school setting.
Participants will learn the core principles and components of PFA-S, including how to recognize emotional needs, provide compassionate and supportive presence, and connect individuals with additional resources when needed. Through interactive discussions and real-world scenarios, attendees will gain confidence in delivering immediate emotional support that fosters resilience and enhances overall school safety and wellbeing. This training is ideal for educators, administrators, counselors, and anyone involved in school crisis response.
Please visit the SESC Upcoming Events Page for upcoming training opportunities.
SESC utilizes the nationally recognized Psychological First Aid for Schools (PFA-S) training and workbook developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and the National Center for PTSD. The original Psychological First Aid Field Operations Guide was created and refined by leading experts in trauma and crisis response, including Melissa Brymer, Anne Jacobs, Christopher Layne, Robert Pynoos, Josef Ruzek, Alan Steinberg, Eric Vernberg, and Patricia Watson. The school-specific adaptation, the Psychological First Aid for Schools Field Operations Guide, was further developed by an NCTSN working group chaired by Melissa Brymer, PhD, PsyD, with key contributions from Pia Escudero, Mindy Kronenberg, Robert Macy, Lou Ann Mock, Linda Payne, Robert Pynoos, Matt Taylor, and Juliet Vogel. SESC trainers have been certified in the delivery of this model and use these nationally validated materials to guide all training provided to school communities.
