We occasionally hear about a variety of opportunities for students from community organizations or companies and are glad to share them here!

Contests and Events

The climate crisis, caused by humans primarily through the burning of fossil fuels like oil and gas, is damaging ecosystems and disrupting people's lives in California and across the globe. To combat this crisis, communities are taking action in many different and creative ways. Whether you are inspired by others' work, already part of an active group, or looking to turn an idea into reality, the California Coastal Commission challenges you to answer the question:

HOW IS YOUR COMMUNITY RESPONDING TO THE CLIMATE CRISIS?

Essay Contest

If you have ever attended a formal debate you know that both sides of a “resolution” are presented, giving everyone an intellectual workout. Here’s yours.

Resolved: That Jane Austen’s novels are still relevant and speak to us after 200 years .

In the first part of the essay you should attack this claim; in the second part defend it. You will be expected to back up each position with quotations and examples from Austen’s works. High school students must cite at least one novel; undergraduate and graduate students will be expected to cite at least two. Citing Austen’s unfinished works is also permitted.


The deadline for submissions is Thursday, June 1, 2024. We will begin accepting entries online in February 2024. In the meantime, it is essential that you visit the Submissions page to learn about the contest rules and eligibility requirements before entering.

Ocean Awareness Contest

The 13th annual Ocean Awareness Contest is a platform for young people to learn about environmental issues through art-making and creative communication, explore their relationship to a changing world, and become advocates for positive change. Students ages 11-18 from around the world are invited to participate.

Youth Essay Contest

Do you enjoy writing and are you passionate about the United States? Enter our youth essay competition today! 

Open to students, ages kindergarten-grade 12. Individual essays may be the product of a classroom assignment or other contest. Entries must be typed, double spaced, corrected, and contain 250-500 words for kindergarten-grade 6 and 500-750 words for grades 7-12. Essays must also address the year’s topic and include the student’s name, address, grade level and teacher’s name. One entry per student. 

Deadline For General Selection: June 1, 2024 – Recipients notified by September 1, 2024
