Strategic Reading Class
Our Strategic Reading Class is an instructional practice that will help students grow as readers and independent thinkers. This class will provide practice for students to become fluent readers, increase their vocabulary comprehension and learn to self-monitor when reading to make sure what they read makes sense and to correct their own errors. Teachers will provide direct and explicit instruction in the six reading strategies from Heinemann Comprehension Toolkit (Monitor Comprehension, Activate and Connect, Determining Importance, Asking Questions, Inferences, Summarize and Synthesize). This will be taught by demonstration, guided instruction and individual practice. Once mastered students will be able to utilize these strategies in other academic areas.
Each student will be assessed using the Reading Level Indicator. This will provide teachers with the students instructional and independent reading levels.
