GROWING SPATIALITIES
GROWING SPATIALITIES
A house is built through stories, people, context, practices, building methodologies and spatial affordances that emerge in and from the history of that particular situation and when you add the factor of aid to it; aid in terms of material resources, be it of building materials or the financial resources to source the making of a house, it generates its own type of making.
My site in the Dahisar T-Manor Village was one such house built under the government scheme that aimed to provide a substantial fund to the people who did not have enough resources to make a "permanent" dwelling of their own. Built in 2011/12 by Kalpesh Nokti's father with the help of other villagers of the village who worked as labourers, this household currently has 5 members namely- Kalpesh Nokti (23), Jagruti Nokti - his wife (22), Kairavi Nokti - daughter (8 months), Sagar Nokti - brother (22) and Kamla Nokti - father, where Kalpesh is the sole bread owner for the family. This house was then studied further to break it down on basis of its spatial experiences, its affordances, its configuration, materiality, etc. to fundamentally question it more.

EARLY OBSERVATION SKETCHES
On further observations, the elements through which the type worked unfolded. Be it through it spatial organization where the arrangement of a private space being sandwiched between the semi-open space to begin with and a open, almost public space in the back indicated that most of the house was open to the neighbors and other people since for the family their life happened more on the outside than inside or be its through poor building methods that resulted in a space almost uninhabitable during certain times of a day I understood my points of reworking or rethinking the existing system.

DESIGN INTENT :
With the current condition in which the house stood and the stories that came out of the family it was observed that the family is looking to extend as and when the resources are available in order to accommodate the new people coming in the family and this continuous shift in the dynamics and the increase and decrease of people along with the structural problems of the house is what drove my conceptual framework of the design.
In an attempt to reimagine the existing house type completely, the design intends to create a new spatiality that supports and provides for easy incrementality to happen. The heaviness of a load bearing structure can be felt with how restrictive the existing space is and replacing it with structural steel is my attempt of providing it the space it needs to grow as the people inhabiting it appropriate it in their own ways. The house tries to open up in subtle and gentler ways making the space breathable. The attempt is to serve this method of building a space as a manual whose design concepts and contemporary building methods can be employed depending on the site condition and a habitable, convenient and comfortable space can be envisioned.
