Mountain Bike Club

April- May 2024

Your Royal Oak Middle School student has expressed an interest in being a member of the Royal Oak Mountain Bike Club. We will have club rides on Wednesday afternoons at the Hartland/ Mt. Work Mountain Bike Park Trails April 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1, 15, 22, 29. Please note there will NOT be a ride on May 8th). Riders should be ready to ride at Hartland at about 3:35 pm from the parking lot at the end of Hartland Road where the bathrooms and wash stations are. Rides will finish at 5:30 pm at the same parking lot. Pick-up arrangements must be made by parents from the Hartland Road parking lot.  All transportation of students will be done by individual families.

We will be asking students and families to arrange their own transportation. I will do my best to create an accessible google doc list, so families can arrange transportation amongst themselves. The google doc list is found on this QR code:

Mountain biking is a safe, healthy, exciting, and highly social activity. However, there are some risks with this activity. Riders will fall off their bikes from time to time, and the opportunity exists for injury as a result of falls to the ground, or contact with trees or branches. We attempt to minimize these risks by guiding small group rides, on terrain that is appropriate for the abilities of the riders in each group, and taking reasonable precautions to be prepared (first aid kits, and cell phones etc.). All students will be riding in a group with an adult at all times. Some of our adult leaders include myself, Mr. Sean Kenny (VP with CDC) and Mr. Alex Jefthas (Team FishBike). Parents are also welcomed to volunteer and ride with us.

Mandatory equipment list for rides with the ROMS mtb club include a mountain bike in good working order, a properly fitted helmet suitable for mountain biking, appropriate footwear (closed toe) and clothing for the weather, and a supply of water to maintain proper hydration during our rides. Riders who arrive without this mandatory equipment will not be able to ride on the day. Optional equipment would include gloves, knee/shin pads, patch kit or spare tube, packable tools, phone, and a snack. If your student has any allergies, or other medical condition, be sure to indicate this on the attached form and be sure that they have medicines on their person at all times. Once your student has joined a group, it would be a good idea for them to make the adults of their group aware of their medical needs.

Attendance to each ride is not mandatory, however, it would be appreciated if students remembered to sign up each day that they are attending and how they will be arriving and being picked up. The sign up sheet will be posted on my classroom door, room 121 (Wolf Hall). This is to ensure that all students are accounted for at the park, and signed out at the end of the ride. We typically ride rain or shine, but if there is a severe thunderstorm or wind storm the administration will cancel our ride out of safety for our group. Thank you in advance for helping with this organization piece.

Thank you for supporting the students in this club. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this opportunity please feel free to contact Ms.Taryn Mah by e-mail at tmah@saanichschools.ca.

Please complete the registration form attached and the appropriate SD 63 consent forms and have your student return them to me in room 121.
